Might explain the delay in getting the test strips out for the other model. Maybe they will give credit towards the XS if the older model is traded in.

I knew that would be the case from the get go Gina. Strips will not be out for another couple of months. Looks like they are banking on folks to upgrade. Which I am up for! Just not in this frustrating manor. Yes, wonder if they will take a trade;) Also explains why there are many S models up for auction on Ebay.

Best I can tell. Retail costs
COAGUCHEK XS KIT (GBP£736.06) (Euro€1138.44) GBP£626.43 Euro€968.88 USD$1275.45 AUD$1603.79

The Coaguchek XS is already available to buy in New Zealand - think it has been for a wee while now. Funny that it should be approved for sale here in little NZ before the States!!
My physician at our local hospital got the rep from Roche (NZ) to send me an info pack. It looks good, and I will definitely be buying.

There is another link I put up yesterday regarding the approval as of 2/5. Think I will give Roche a call to confirm.

PS........According this article....available to patients. According to Roche. Not so. Oh well....back to the drawing board. Roche also does not have a release date on the strips for the older models.

Another update......

Contacted Tapestry Medical
www.tapestrymedical.com.

#1 : Tapestry anticipates word from Roche any day now on the release of the XS for patient self-testing. Meaning it has worked through the FDA ranks. Tapestry is now waiting on a manufacture release and pricing from Roche. First link I put up does hold true. If you would like to list your name with Tapestry for an XS...they are compiling at the moment.

#2 strips for the older units should be available by April.

I don't think Roche wants to handle calls from end users. Any answer I receive from them is vague. My source for accurate up to date info has always came from one of their suppliers. Interesting

I will wait for my call from Tapestry:) Soon as they have the units in hand....they will be calling folks off their list.

XS available in Canada

XS available in Canada

In October of 2006 my "S" broke down while still under warranty. Strips are available here so it's difficult to understand why they aren't readily available in the US. It's very strange.

My S was replaced at my request with the new XS. It was approved here in July 2006 and I'm quite happy with it.

Gina:
Thank you so much for doing all the work on this. Once again you have helped me in a big way. Al and I are also waiting for the release of the XS and have been tempted to just get something else. Our dr. has a new anti-coag clinic which uses the CoaguChek and he wants us to use the same make. This will make him happier too. I have also placed a call to Tapestry and hope "Sally" will get back to me soon.

Again, many thanks,
Blanche

Hi Blanche,

Happy to do so. That's why we are all here:) One hand washes the other;)

Let's hope we hear something from Tapestry soon! Think I have 1 Coaguchek strip left! Now.... if we can only get the ins to approve the unit! At this point..so tired of playing games with the ins co. Will pay cash and go for reimbursement later. Not worth the additional stress.

Finally Roche is releasing XS model. I contacted them many times in the past but could not get them to commit to a firm release date.

We have been using XS for about 6 months and been very happy.
It is very small but we did not care too much about the size because other machines were small enough.
Nice thing about it is the ease of applying samples because it lets you touch the side of stip to apply like a glucose monitors. You can also touch the top of the stip. And you do not need to referegerate the strip.

We have not used other machines so I cannot make a fair comparison with other machines. I did lots of research on this forum and different manufacturers web sites to compare the statistical information, etc and XS seemed a good choice.
The choice was not entiely made by us because a doctor friend went ahead and bought it for us while we were still trying to decide which one :D . And it turned out to be pretty good choice.

We did about 20 comparison with our local lab. (note the emphasis on "our local lab". There seems to be variance between commercial labs and your local lab may produce different result. I think Lance in Ontario saw a bigger variance than us from his local lab).

1/3 of time, INR differ by 0.3, 1/3 of time: 0.2, 1/3 of time:0.1 to 0.0 difference.
Did not see a bias (meaning sometime XS was higher, sometimes it was lower without a definitve pattern)

We go to the local lab where the vein draw and the testing are done in the same building to minimize the chance of the sample sitting in the courier's car too long, etc and raise a hell when we do not get the result within a few hours.

Hope this helps..

Hi EJ,

Thank you very much for your input. Happy to hear you are pleased with the XS! Love the idea for the "glucose type" testing. Do you have any idea what they retail for? Have been a CoaguChek user for 7 years. Original model. Always very accurate. Unit vrs. lab.

Gina,
I do not know what US price would be....
Our price was close to UK price.

I am sure if you do not use insurance, you would get discount off the full retail price like other machines...

In theory, the strip price should be lower. XS strips are not individually packaged. Instead they come into small round tube box like glucose test strips. Even Roche web site said the reason was to lower the cost
Not needing referegeration should also lower the handling/transporation cost in the supply chain.
We will see if Roche makes good on that statement with lower strip prices.

It uses standard AAA batteries and the batteries seem to last long. After the twice a week tests over 6 months, it is still going strong on the same set of batteries..

Thank you again EJ. Very promising for the home tester.

Will be sure to ask about a discount based on a cash purchase! Every little bit helps.
Mark up to the ins carriers is insane. Double plus in some cases!

Was attempting to puchase another unit a few months back. My carrier determined that the claim was a necessary based on my valve and lifelong anticoagulation requirements. Loophole was.....last three months of INR readings were not within range. Since then...I have straightned out my situation. Once I submit my claim personally...they will not have a leg to stand on! Well...at lease I hope it to be so:eek:

I did not bother going through my insurance.
We get the EOB (Explanation of Benefits) statements from our insurance company that lists claim staus.
For INR testing, it looks like it costs our insurance ZERO $.
According to EOB, the lab will submit a claim for $99 (including the STAT charge which basically doubles the fee).
The insurance will disallow $85 of it and list $15 as the pre-negotiated price.
Our copay of the lab is $25.
Since the pre-negotiated price is $15 (less than $25 copay), the lab bills us $15 and we pay $15.
And the insurance does not need to pay anything.

For other test like the blood chemistry, we saw the pre-negotiated price was higher than $25 and insurance will pay (their price - $25) and we pay $25.

Given this, I think our insurance will have a cow if I ask them to cover the home testing.

XS difference to vein draw

XS difference to vein draw

EJ,

Thanks for posting the difference (hardly any) between your XS and lab test. Very encouraging especially after 20-test experiences.

When I went for training the V draw was 3.5 and XS 4.2. and was assured by both Roche and the lab the difference was in the acceptable range. The variance did cause me some concern. I look forward to my 6-month comparison test next month.

Mine is still running on the original batteries too. Nice little machine.

Thanks for the information.

Spoke with Sally from Tapestry this afternoon. She said that they do not yet have the pricing for the new XS monitors but that they would probably be more than last year's price of $2,135. She said she knows of no price discount for individuals who buy the monitor themselves. She has promised to call me with a firm price as soon as they get the new monitors.
