Lyn, I have noticed the same thing....a couple of men in my nutrition class had obviously been on a diet of hotdogs, fries, chips and pizza.
When we all talked about food choices, they admitted it:)

Hey!!! You just mentioned the 4 major food groups:p :p :p

Docs & Rehab

Prior to my surgery, I asked both my surgeon and cardiologist about doing rehab after surgery. Neither were too concerned about having me do a rehab program. They felt that if I engaged in exercising on my own post-op I would be okay.

My cardiologist changed his mind and decided I would benefit from a program. His primary concern involved keeping me from having a stupid attack and overdoing things.

Since exercise is so strongly advised following AVR surgery some doctors probably see cardiac rehab as an option rather than a requirement.

Rehab

I started rehad 3 weeks post surgery; I found it more of a confidence booster. :) I was in class IV heart failure before surgery and the surgeon later admitted in his opinion I was within 2 weeks of death so that gives you an idea as to my condition presurgery. It gave me an opportunity to exercise under supervision and build some confidence that I was no longer fragile. :) I must say though that there was only 3 VR patients, most were >60 heart attack patients.

I started cardio rehab 6 weeks post-op. They would not let me start earlier even though I wanted to. I was cycled and walked on my own until rehab though.

I was mostly interested in getting into rehab because I wanted to get back to triathlons, but in a wise way (I have a tendency to overdo it). The cardio rehab has been great and I am now swimming, jogging and cycling again (did a 2 hour cycle today and felt great).
