Does anyone know if bovine or porcine valves can be used for mitral valve replacement
or does it need to be mechanical?

Also, I remember several years ago some posts at this forum about radiation induced aortic stenosis, but I can't find them any more when I search. The Cleveland Clinic seems to think my aortic stenosis was caused by radiation therapy I had in 1985, but several cardiologists (Wisconsin, Florida) have told me radiation doesn't cause aortic stenosis. What am I to believe? Has anyone here been diagnosed with stenosis caused by radiation therapy?

Thanks

Hi, Yes you can get tissue valves in the Mitral position.
Im not sure what you searched for, but with just searching for radiation, I found a few threads, this looks like it might be one you are looking for

Thanks Lyn. I don't know why I couldn't get the thread on radiation - I searched twice under the keyword "radiation"
oh well, it's good to see posts from others confirmation that radiation can be a cause of stenosis. Thanks also for the
answer on biometric replacement of mitral valves.

Hi Gail,

I had bovine tissue valve implanted to replace my mitral valve over three years ago and am doing great.
(Well, I think I'm doing great but had routine ECHO yesterday to be sure about that.)

All things being equal for you, definitely you can request a bovine valve for mitral replacement.
