I have an interesting question for everyone...Is anybody else always freezing after their open heart surgery? I think I will start a poll to see. I am always warm to the touch, but I am always shivering because I am freezing! It's like 77 degrees in my house and I could be freezing under like 3 blankets!

I switch back and forth. I'm hot most of the time, but I do have occasions when I need those blankets. I notice that I don't tolerate this cold weather as well as I did last year also. :)

Freezing? No, but I have definitely noticed a diminished tolerance for cold. I wonder if it's one of my medications. I used to be the guy that was always turning down the furnace, now I'm the guy piling on the blankets and socks! For a month or so after my surgery it was really alarming, even with blankets and sweaters I couldn't get warm.

I also have noticed a diminished tolerance to the cold weather and I have been freezing in the house, too, but our thermostat is set at 68. My feet aren't cold anymore. I wonder if it's another left over treat from anesthesia and the by-pass pump?

I think I feel cold due to the Coumadin and it is getting cold here in Michigan.
My wife and I are always fighting over the thermostat.
She always wins of course.:)

I've changed too

I've changed too

Hi Guys,

I also feel less tolerant of the cold than I did before my AVR, and this is a guy who often used to feel the heat! I've got used to needing to wear an extra layer, certainly in the winter. I have even had to turn on the radiator in our bedroom, something even my heat-loving wife didn't find necessary.

I regard this as a small price to pay for a healthy heart!!

Regards to all,

Simon

Good question, Joy!
I'm still confused by this issue.
On the one hand, I feel immune to the heat and cold. I worked outside all summer in the heat of the day with no problem. Now I just ignore the cold and look forward to spring, just around the corner.
On the other hand, my feet are still cold, and my hands have been getting cold. If blood circulation is so much better after surgery, how can I be feeling cold?

Temps!?

Temps!?

Between hot flashes, I think I am warmer, but who can tell if it is just a slow cooking flash?!

Feet fall asleep?

Feet fall asleep?

I am an early riser..so try to lay back in recliner for a 20 min. nap around 2 ish..My feet always fall asleep..and am chilled when I get up...Also hate the wind blowing..Everyone get ready for a cold Turkey Day...Bonnie

always cold

always cold

Believe it or not winter used to be my favorite time of year (I guess I am kinda nuts) but now I find myself missing those warm days of summer, but then I stay in because of the heat. I sit in front of the fire place just about all winter now. I don't know what I'd do without it.

I'm glad someone finally brought this up, I've been meaning to ask you all about feeling cold ALL the time. I was cold before surgery too, with the poor circulation and swelling of my feet but now post-op...I'm always freezing. I try to tell my family and boyfriend but they're just not as cold as I am. My hands and feet are always like icicles. I've been wearing 2 pairs of socks, Regular ones and the few I "borrowed" from the hospital that are like fleece and have the little rubber on the bottom. Wish I was wearing them today, Cause I slipped and fell down the stairs and really bruised up my back and tail-bone.  Been in pain all day! But anyway, Does anyone have any answers to why some of us are so cold?? I was anemic after surgery but recent blood tests have come back good.

I feel warmer after surgery:) :) :) I know when I woke up in ICU a day after surgery I was roasting. My feet don't get as cold as they use to be. Even in the hospital I didn't have extra blankets and I love lots of blankets to sleep with. Anyhow I have been warmer after surgery.

Hope you are alright from your fall. Hitting your tailbone is the worst!
I have worn socks to bed at night for the last few years because my feet were always cold. Right after surgery my feet were hot but I still kept my socks on. I can't sleep without them now. But lately, since it's been cold, my feet are getting cold again. My husband made me a hot water bottle a few nights ago for my cold feet. And I have been freezing all he time. The only one who sympathizes is my dad, he's cold all the time, too.

Anyway, Nicole, I sympathize with you.

Hope you are feeling better and not bruised too badly.

Hi Nicole,

Sorry to hear about your fall. Be careful on those stairs!
Also outdoors. It snowed here today. About 3 inches. Started to thaw. Now we are pretty well frozen. Scary to walk on. I really need to upgrade my boots. Didn't really have a need for them in TN. It seems I become very uncoordinated when walking across ice. Something I haven't had to worry about since surgery until this winter.

In answer to your question about being cold. I was very much so post op. It feels better now, but I still have my days here. We recently moved back from TN...... so I am really feeling it thus far. Snow and ice doesn't help ;).

Really feel it is the blood thinner that keeps some of us that live further north colder than others. I may be wrong, but it sure seems logical.
PS. Could you add an in-between on your poll.

I use to take the cold better then I do now. Not that I was a cold lover by any means. I can be covered up with blankets, and have the temp up to 80 and still be cold. It's my feet that cause the problem. The only thing to cure is a hot shower and then some warm slippers. Good to know that there are other out there that have this problem since surgery. Love, martha

I'm an odd ball for this one. Before the AVR I could tolerate the heat and not the cold. Now, it is the other way around. Although over all ,I don't think I tolerate either extreem very well. Last year when it was very hot...I purchased my first AC. Then I could breath. There is one possiblity other then temp. That being humidity! Winter is very dry and summer wet. I wounder which it realy is?

When I was in the army a friend jumped off the bed of a deuce/half truck and hit his tail-bone. he was in extreme pain.
I guess there really is a tail-bone, any way it was damaged(broken?) to the point that he had to go to have it operated on.
So watch out for those flush on the behind landings, OUCH! I'll bet that hurt, I can almost feel the pain.

Hi Joy,

I'm wearing a lot more layers of clothing than I did before surgery. In fact I never wore mutiple layers because I hated all those clothes on. Now I'm just the opposite. I agree with Gina. I figured it was because I was on Coumadin now. It does thin your blood, so it would stand to reason that those of us who do take Coumadin would get chillier faster.

Gina, watch out for the ice! I too am a clutz on any ice. I just went and bought some boots that are suppose to be skid free. So far so good! We'll see.

Nicole, I hope you didn't seriousely hurt yourself. I fell on my tailbone once so I know the pain you're feeling. Please take care of your self.
