Oh by the way the surg is not all that bloody as you may think. The heart is clamped and is syphoned for the lack of a better word. If we get blood it has a lot too do with how badly the heart lung machine broke down cell while pumping your blood. And the amount of heprin used can also cause a little more bleeding then expected. Furthermore some of us run boarderline anemic anyway. Something they will try to account for.

Hello All:

My husband was told by his surgeon to donate two pints of his own blood prior to the surgery. He did donate one pint, and frankly I do not think that was good. Made him sicker than he already was. He was on coumaden at the time. When we went to the Red Cross to donate the second pint, the nurse took me aside and told me they could not take the blood, and that I should bring him to the emergency room. He barely had a pulse. (That is another story by the way.) They DID use the one pint of blood on him during the surgery 2 and a half weeks later. Charged us $500.00, which insurance did not pay...which was ok. I could not donate my blood, which matched his type, as there was insufficient time to have them do the other "matches" they need to do before the transfusion. He was very anemic before and after the surgery.
His cardio, and the Red Cross, told him he would never be able to donate blood. One can understand this from the amount of meds he takes!!!! Thought I'd add his story! - Marybeth
