I'm 46 yrs young (feel like I'm 20). I have BAV and it has been monitored for 7 yrs or so. Recently, I was having some chest pains for a two week period in Feb - a catheterization was done and the next thing I know, I have an appt with the surgeon - I'm thinking, wait a minute, I thought I had another 5yrs, I feel fine. Surgeon stated I can get it done anytime, as long as it is in 2012.

I have surgery tomorrow (4/25/12) and I'm still on the fence, although based on much reading and great info from this group, I'm leaning towards the mechanical (on-x). Certainly, reviewing thegymguys hospital blog gave me a clear picture of what to expect and whether I would want to go thru this again in 10 years if I chose the cow valve. I'm still concerned about the coumadin regiment/hassle and the risk if I'm injured in an activity - since I'm very active (hiking, biking, tennis, sailing offshore.....).

Nothing like taking it down to the wire.

WELCOME to our OHS family
Putting you on the family calendar now

Godspeed

Good luck Mac! My thoughts and prayers will be with you tomorrow. I look forward to hearing from you in recovery. I went with a mechanical valve three weeks ago and don't think Coumadin is that big of a deal. Gotta go with what works for you. Take care.

Tom

Good luck tomorrow, and please update us as soon as you can. The surgery will start and finish in 2 minutes (at least it will seem this way to you), and then you will start a road to recovery.

I'm glad my post came in helpful, I hope your recovery is as fast as mine. Do not just take it laying down, fight every moment, fight with your mind and ask for help to sit up as often as you can.

Also, make sure to get painkillers before pain starts but manage it just so that you can still be very mobile and alert. You will be dizzy and lightheaded alot, and that will pass. Do not let that distract you from moving around.

I will send lots of positive thoughts your way tomorrow.

I didn't decide until 8 PM on the night before surgery. It's now a little after 9 PM. I hope you decided. :)

Welcome aboard... Thoughts and prayers going out to you for a successfull surgery and a speedy recovery!

Rob

I'm off to the hospital in a half hour and no, I have not decided yet. My wife and I will debate and discuss it down to the wire. My wife and my Mom are actually leaning toward bovine.

Thanks everyone !!
