Jody,
The reason to see the dentist before surgery is because you won't find a responsible dentist to perform anything but the most severe dental emergency treatments on you for at least 6 months post OHS. The probability of strep endocarditis is extremely high when you have oral work and a healing heart combined.
The first stop for your dental work should be to have your teeth cleaned by a hygenist then see the dentist/oral surgeon for all of your procedures. If you can't afford the dentist you might be able to get a referral from your surgeon or community health offices to one who does pre-op work at low cost or for free. You won't know until you ask.
Take heart, it will be over and you can begin to be well before you know it.
