Hello Christina

Welcome to a great place. Tyce, my hubby, had afib about a month prior to surgery. As Betty said, it was his only way of knowing it was time to get hit by that mack. He didn't know he was in afib, he only knew he couldn't sleep.....long story short, he was admitted to the er with a heart rate of about 196, spent the week there and converted by meds. The entire time he was in ICU he was laughing, joking, etc, because he couldn't feel it....but just one look at his monitor and you knew it! As our cardio said, "It's time!"

Post op he was in afib for about 3-4 days and converted the day we brought him home. However, his cardio kept him on Amiodarone for about 5-6 months to make sure all was well and his heart was healed. He has been fine since.

Now if you want to have a worry wart contest, I can guarantee I'd be in the top ten....just ask Rossman, Bonnie, Nancy, Henslyee ....they were thee first ones to deal with me when I found this site!!! I can say, thanks to them, I made it through my husband's surgery.....but it does take it's toll.

Again, welcome! This is a great place....they cheer you, yell at you, worry about you, care for you and pray for you. It sure has been a second home for me!!

Christina, I had several short bouts of a-fib in the hospital, and 1 after I returned home. It seemed to me that the cardiac staff was really ho-hum and unalarmed by it - they have LOTS of ways to treat it. For me it was going on amiodarone for the duration in the hospital, and a month after coming home.

It wasn't really uncomfortable, but it did feel kind of weird (quivering/tickly). A couple of times I wasn't even aware it had happened because it corrected itself in a minute or two - they had to walk down the hall from the monitoring station to see if I was doing calisthenics or something, LOL.

I've never had a relapse.

Sincerely,
Johnny (certified Level 3 Master Worrier)
