I have aortic stenosis, saw my surgeon friday. He is going to do a 4" partial sternotomy & use an Edwards bovine valve. Will find out monday when they can do it. My valve opening is down to .48cm. Looking forward to getting it replaced.

Hi, Gary,

The docs will probably say that it is time to replace your valve. You've "consumed" the original one, but as you know, replacements are available. I also have the Edwards bovine pericardial valve, implanted when my native valve area was down to about .98 cm2. You are well past that, hence my guess as to timing. It sounds like your surgeon is planning about the same procedure I had. The scar is no big deal. In my case, they even made the cut a bit off center, so that I can wear shirts open at the neck and not have the scar show. I wouldn't have cared either way, but at least this way I don't get odd looks from the gawkers.

Hang in there. Best of luck and keep us posted as things progress.

Welcome Gary,
I'm another bovine valver. Mine valve lasted a while longer that what I see yours has, but not to worry, once that little cow valve is implanted, you are gonna feel like a million bucks (ok, ok, maybe not right away) But I am wishing you a very successful surgery and bumpy free recovery. Keep us posted as you travel this new road to a better stronger you. :)

Gary-

I just had my AVR on 3/1, replaced with the C/E bovine valve. While I am only in the early stages of recovery, I can already report that the shortness of breath I had in the weeks before surgery is gone. Yes, even with these easy, short walks. Good luck with your surgery and let us know if we can help in the meantime.

Hi all, this is Gary's wife, Debbie and I will fill you in all next week until he gets back on his feet. I am sure I will need to find busy things to do, so I will post on his behalf. Thanks to all for your support and encoraging words.

Good luck on Monday Gary (and Debbie)! My thoughts and prayers will be with you all the way. Can't wait to hear from you in recovery.

Tom
