aortic and mitral valve replacement

I have had several surgeries in my 64 years, including three for cancer. I had aortic valve replacement in April and I can truthfully say it was totally painless. As I struggled awake waited for that first pang of pain; it never came. My throat was sore and developed a small infection fro the tube and it was painful when I coughed or sneezed. But it never hurt as so many surgeres do nor did I need any pain mediction for it. I was amazed. Hope yours goes as well.

Hello Judy,

Glad your husband came through his surgery OK.

I *assume* he was placed on a diuretic to help remove the fluid buildup and swelling.

Do you have a recliner? He may sleep better in an inclined position. Also, elevating his feet will help reduce the swelling in his feet and legs.

Did he receive an 'incentive spirometer' for breathing exercises? I was told to do them for 10 minutes every 2 hours to push the fluids out of my lungs which helps prevent pneumonia and restores breathing capability to normal.

Best wishes for his recovery.
