re: pneumonia shot: Just discussed this with my mom - she said that when she originally got it she was told it was for life; then 10 years. Now they're telling her it's 5 years (she's elderly but very healthy). Sound a lot like what they did with the measles vaccine 25 years ago - I had one kid who got revaccinated 4 times because they kept changing when and how many times kids should have it. The last time she had an awful reaction (hives head to toe) because she'd developed an egg allergy. She'd had the same reaction to a flu shot a few years previously, but no one had realized it was due to eggs.

Flu shot: really red, swollen, sore arm - like tetanus used to feel when I was a kid. Hubby had same reaction. I've never had one before, so I don't know if the reaction is unusual. But he's always gotten one and said this hurt a lot more than any he's had before. Weird.

The rules for the flu clinics in arizona that i work for: pneumonia you get 2 in a lifetime and you need to have at least 5 yrs between shots. if sooner, you can get sick from the vaccine because you still have immunity from the first shot. again 2 in a lifetime with the 2nd shot being a booster(same dose). We find alot of clients coming in and stating that their doctor wants them to get the pneumonia shot every 5 yrs. That is wrong. Also with the flu shot, it takes up to 2 wks to take full effect so if someone got sick with flu couple days after getting the shot, chances are they were exposed to flu before getting the shot, immune system got lowered from getting the shot, and therefore got sick. So remember to build up your immune system and move those arms lots!! Hope this helps.

Pam, this puts it in perspective from a clinical point of view. I have been sitting on the fence, afraid of getting the second pneumonia shot. Maybe one doesn't have to take the shot within 5 years, but must wait at least 5 years. That sounds like what the 5 yrs means. I have never heard of anyone getting sick from the pneumonia shot at all, but it's still a relatively new immunization and I just want to be sure before I take the plunge. I am afraid of pneumonia - it sure makes you feel awful.

Flu Shots

Hi Everyone, Well just got my yearly flu shot yesterday, and to my suprise and just in time for the flu season. Never had any problems or reactions from it. I get them ever year. Good to read all of your notes,. Been pretty busy, but miss reading on the forum. Syl

Got my Flu shot two days ago and my arm isn't sore , swollen or itchy! Unlike last year, when I got it the day before the Vegas reunion. It hurt and was swollen the whole time at the reunion. Any time I received one from my doctors office (where I went Friday) I've never had a reaction. Anytime I've had it done at the stores or when they give them at work at the health fairs (like last year) I do get a reaction. Is it possible there is a v=certain tchnique to doing it a right way, and wrong way? Thats what I think! Hmmmm!

Also asked doc about another pnuemonia shot and he said every 10 years. I had my first one in 1998.

Hi Eveyone!

Hi Eveyone!

Just to let you all know, I got my shot over two weeks ago and caught a cold a week later. But am glad to got the shot over. Preventive medicine is great. Had bad bout with the flu as a kid and never want it that bad again. It lasted three weeks and hardly slept during the first two weeks. Been luck since I growed up. Always check with the doctor if you are confused over the pnuemonia shots. There are always misinformation out there about often shots are to be given. Take care.
