AntiBiotics for TEE ?

SO my fellow TransEsophageal Echocardiogram recipients (or anyone else who KNOWS), did you receive antibiotic premedication before having your TEE?

My Cardiologist wants me to have a TEE to get a better view of my heart and valves before my MVR. His (YOUNG) Nurse advises me that antibiotics are NOT necessary for a TEE, but I'm not so sure. Your inputs would be Greatly Appreciated!

I did NOT have antibiotics before my TEE.

I did not take them. I can't imagine a TEE causing bleeding (or similar bacteria issues) unless the doctor messes up.

Well, everyone else says "no", but I distinctly remember asking them if I needed to take my antibiotics ahead of time for mine and they said, "No, we'll administer them to you here." And, they did. Perhaps my cardiologist was just being extra careful. It certainly didn't hurt to be on the safe side. Who's to say that they couldn't scratch the inside of the esophagus. For what it's worth, I found the procedure itself it be quite easy. Good luck!

The antibiotics question was up in the air right up to the time I had my TEE. I ended up not taking antibiotics before the test.

My concern is that there 'could be' a stricture (from my GERD issue) that might get 'stretched' and bleed.

OTOH, I can eat normally and haven't had any food get stuck LATELY.

Just trying to cover all the bases 'Beforehand'...
