Had the CT last Monday, before my visit to the Cardio. Showed no damage at all to the Aorta. Actually, because both Dad & Uncle had a descending Aortic Dissection, They took the CT way down. Found out that my prostate is enlarged, not a suprise though. Cardio has stated by looking at my results, both from here and from Illinois, that there is no evidence of any damage to the Aorta and only wants to keep an eye on it every 5 years. They already mentioned that they will schedule both the TEE and CATH. Had both 3 years ago and both were very good as well.

I am very aware of how the dissections are silent killers. My dad actually suffered his right after giving a eulogy for my uncle at a later memorial service. Walked back to his table, grabbed my cousins wife & dropped. Never knew he had it. Died at 73, way too young. So, I'm aware and all males in our generation in our family are having this checked every 5 years.

I am so sorry to hear about your father and Uncle. Your Father's death must have come as quite a shock to everyone considerring where it happend.
I'm glad to hear They have been keeping an eye on your entire Aorta and the rest of the males in your family have been getting their checked (I'm curious if there is a reason only the men are?) Are there any questions we could help you with or things to ask your surgeon about? I can imagine your family is worried knowing as much as they do about Aortic problems, so hopefully You will be able to have your surgery soon and get on to the recovery.

Met with my surgeon this AM and have set a date for the surgery. Friday November 19. Did decide to go with the tissue valve and he is doing the minimally invasive procedure. Felt very comfortable with him and he answered all of my questions. Going today for a PFT and cardio is scheduling the other 2 tests I need . 17 days, lots to do beforehand.

Mark,

I'm a mitral repair, but I always find myself reading w/interest and empathy, regardless. When you say "minimally invasive" do you know what kind the surgeon is referring to? I had a mini-thoracotomy, so if that's his plan, I'd be glad to answer any questions I can.

BTW, my migraines changed post-op as well...only auras now--no pain or nausea!

Marcia

Just wanted to say hello and welcome you to VR.

As others have said, you sound prepared for what you know you must do in order to go on living! Valve choice is entirely a personal choice......if you feel comfortable with what you have in mind, then go for it and don't look back. I suspect you will do just fine! :)

Godspeed!

I'm having the mini-sternotomy. Picked up a copy of my echo from my cardio today and it did show severe calcific aortic stenosis. and moderate to severe concentric left ventriclular hypertrophy.
