After seeing what Katrina did, people are still willing to try and ride it out? Has everyone lost their marbles or just me?

The problem in Houston right now is traffic. People are running out of gas waiting on the roads. They have not yet changed the roads to "one way out of town only." They said earlier today that, the way traffic was (not) moving, it would take people 24 hours to get to Dallas!!!!!! In addition, the airport is packed and some folks would rather take their chances in their homes than being stuck in a terminal.

Hopefully they will change the roads soon and things will clear up a little. But, again, unless that happens, people would rather stay in their homes than end up stuck on the highway or out of gas.

If we learn nothing from these 2 storms but how to evacuate a city properly, they might have been worth something.

The biggest problem is, people wait too long to take action. They should have been moving 2 days ago! Then again, I'm not there, so I'm probably talking out my tail.

Good point but, until the words "mandatory evacuation" are spoken, people take the chance of "abandoning" their jobs if they leave. Granted, a job is not worth your life but, if there is a city to come back to, you have to have a job to pay your bills and carry on with your life.
This is the first time a hurricane this size has been "personal" to me so I am seeing things differently. If I heard someone actually flew TO Houston last night, I would have thought they were crazy. But, now that it is my SO going to help his family, I have a different perspective. It's amazing how things can change.

My cousin & husband and their 18YO son are on the parking lot formerly known as Interstate 45, around Conroe, heading to her mother-in-law's home in Dallas. They were planning to go in 2 vehicles, canned that idea. (Probably for the best!) They left at 3 a.m., planning to head up US 59, and meander their way to Dallas, but ditched that plan because of congestion. So, they cut through on 105 -- found gasoline in a town called Cut and Shoot -- and somehow got on to I-45. I talked to her at 9:45 a.m. CDT and she plans to make it to Dallas by nightfall. (They've got a couple of extra fuel cans, just in case.)

My boss said everyone should be heading west, not north, because Rita will move on north through Dallas & Fort Worth. We're hearing that all hotel rooms are full in Dallas & Fort Worth and surrounding area.

We went to a Wal-Mart between Fort Worth & Weatherford last night and found very little drinking water in gallon containers. Lots of that "premium" filtered water that Coca-Cola markets, but not much plain ol' water (i.e., Ozarka). We stocked up on batteries, bought a lantern flashlight & some small propane cannisters. Never can be too sure.

My sister Cathy lives in an apartment complex in Dallas with lots & lots of trees. She's going to spend tonight through Sunday night at our parents -- not many trees there. We expect to have a lot of wind damage in the storms when the remanants of the hurricane move north.

Oh great! You all remember my recruiting candidate that was supposed to fly from New Orleans to Denver, but then Katrina hit? Guess what? He's scheduled to fly out of Baton Rouge this Sunday, transfer at DFW and then into Denver! Great - here we go again. I just talked to him and am waiting for our travel agent to call back with any possible restrictions at Baton Rouge or DFW. I wonder if they'll restrict DFW for relief staging???

This guy is not having any luck getting here to see about a job!
This is an easy one! Just tell him he's hired and you'll see him whenever he might be able to make it in. ;)

Pam:
I'd be real surprised if DFW was used as a triage or hospital for any injured. The NO Airport was used because it was impossible to get to hospitals.

It's possible that DFW may shut down periodically Saturday AND Sunday because of weather. Which would throw all flights off schedule, what with rescheduling passengers from the canceled/delayed flights, etc.

In June 2000, I was to fly to Albuquerque on a Wednesday evening for a convention. We had had horrible storms that day. All flights were canceled out of DFW. The airport was packed when I got there. I inquired about hopping various flights to ABQ, was told I could get to Amarillo but only way to get to ABQ from there was to switch to Southwest Airlines for that leg.

Is it possible the travel agent can reroute him to avoid going through DFW???

Just checked in w/ my cousin -- I am amazed that I've been able to get through to her cell, that the circuits aren't all busy! -- and they're around Corsicana TX, 2 counties south of Dallas, normally about 1.5 hours south of Dallas. Corsicana is the home of Wolf Brand Chili and Collins Street Baker, where the world's absolutely best fruitcake is made.

She thinks they'll be at her mother-in-law's house about 4-5 p.m. I think it will be 7-8.

They're exhausted. Their son is mentally challenged -- I've mentioned him here before, because he has MVP, in addition to other problems. Josh is a wonderful young man, but can't go with the flow of the situation. If they only had a DVD player in their car!!!!!

Relatives from Houston are staying with my sister-in-law in Dallas suburb - 20 hour drive (normally 4 hr). Yuk.

Delta through Cincinnati..

Marsha -- there are no flights from DFW - ABQ on WN (SWA) as per the Wright Amendment - they're only allowed flights out of Love Field. You would have had to change airports. And yes, you're certainly right Marsha - people should be heading West and not North to escape Rita.

Would you look at our temperature here now (3PM)....100F/38C degrees and climbing! Weird weather, real weird...

Janie:
That's right. I meant (and forgot that others are dyslexic like my husband and can't read my mind  ) I would have had to fly from DFW to AMA on American, then from AMA to ABQ on Southwest... that's what I contemplated doing. But ... decided to go with the flow, go back home & return the next day to fly out.

First, I'm sorry about your Mama's birthday party..I know, Daddy really enjoyed his 90th last October.. We put his picture in Newspaper with 4 generations of boys..Boy, he was the center of attention in his hometown that week. Everyone calling him and taking copies of paper to him....and now soon to be age 91..and going strong. Walks a mile every a.m...cuts his grass with push-mover, ect..Watches EVERY Atlanta Braves game..everyday.. Wish your Mama a Happy Birthday from me.. :) ..How far are you from where the RITA may make landfall? Tornadoes can hit many hundreds miles away..My village in the mountains ( and they said, tornatoes don't land in Mountains)..should see my poor village..Most all trees gone. From Katrina.....Take care..Bonnie

How have I missed this thread til now?

I know we have members in the area that will receive damage. I pray you will all be safe.

Nurse cousin who took care of me after heart surgery lives in Houston - they are staying home. Hope they will be ok. It is their choice to ride it out. Galveston is about 45 mi from Houston, so they are really close!

We are 25 miles north of Dallas. We should be fine. We'll spend some time today battening down loose objects outside. Latest forecast for us expects the winds to dissipate, but we could get 20" rain.

My son came home with friends from Texas A&M last night. Took 8 hours - normally 3 1/2 hours. He was intending to come home this weekend anyway. His exodus was not an evacuation but an early trip home. They headed west to pick up I-35 at Waco and avoided the I-45 parking lot. They got stuck behind a wreck on the back roads and went about 3 MPH for a long time. Passengers were getting out of their cars and walking along side. I-35 was smooth sailing around midnight.

I was pretty dreary eyed when he got home, but heard him say that the police were patrolling the shoulders to discourage "cheaters". Tank trucks were also delivering gas to motorists on the expressways.

A&M has cancelled classes today (Friday) and are hosting evacuated students from other state schools along the coast. They are pretty far inland and the buildings are stout, so they should be okay. A disaster plan is in place with skeleton crews and restricted food service. Students have been told to stock some food and water and stay indoors during the height of the storm. They played their football game last night but asked that only students attend - that everyone stay off the roads.

A&M is already hosting 6 varsity sports from Tulane due to Katrina. They will compete as Tulane and use the Aggie facilities.

Some estimates are as high as 2.3 million people on the move. I-45 has been converted to both sides north bound from Houston to Corsicana. Seems like the bell curve may have peaked yesterday. Hope so. This exodus is an incredible accomplishment.

Based on the latest forecast track, Houston and Galveston will be on the "weak" side of Rita as it comes ashore. The worst winds will strike the border of Texas and Louisiana and track north from there on the Texas side of the TX/LA border.

Praying for all involved.

And now a busload of nursing home evacuees from Bellaire, a Houston TX suburb, has exploded on I-45 just south of Dallas. We're hearing that 24 are dead. Seems that the O2 tanks may have exploded when a brake problem triggered a fire. This is what I've pieced together, based on co-workers' checking local TV/radio/newspaper websites.

Tom:
My supervisor said a friend was taking a truckoad (pickup? SUV? dunno) of food & water Wednesday or Thursday to his son, who is a student at A&M, because the local stores are wiped out of food.

Uh, I've been called lotsa things, but dyslexic hasn't been one of them...
Last month my husband & I were setting up for a cat show in Arlington TX. Our club decided to save some $$$ and not set up on Friday; instead, we started at 6 a.m. Saturday. A friend from Kansas had offered to lend a hand. I commented to Steve that John just couldn't read my mind, darnit!, and he said neither could he, and that they both must be dyslexic. ;)

Well, my SO and his brother's family are now in the Dallas area. They left Houston around 3AM and the roads were fairly clear by then. Since Rita is now a Category 3, many people are questioning their decision to leave. I am sure the families of the folks in the bus tragedy are questioning their decision. What a sad story. "Some things just ain't right".

Hopefully the storm will continue to calm down and the damage will be not too bad.
