Yeah, I know...way off topic, but figured I'd share with ya'll anyway....

John C (El Camino list) and I went to a car show at Elgin Community College Saturday afternoon.

In John's words:
"It was a revelation to see some alternative fuel cars there. They run Biodiesel, and Vegitable Oil. They start on the diesel, and after they warm up, they switch to the oil. You switch them back to diesel before shutting them down, so you can start again. Basically, you need to heat up the oil, in order for it to run right. You get about the same mileage, and it smells like French Fries or fish instead of diesel. The kits are about $800 to get. These guys installed their own, in everything from an early 80's Van to a 2005 Jetta. Start with a Diesel, and end up burning free oil from your favorite greasy spoon. They have to pay to have someone haul the oil away, so they are happy to let you have it. You have a tank in your garage, and filter it through a 1 micron filter sock, let the other sediment settle to the bottom, and take the good stuff off the top."

It was a great show and I'm glad John called me to get me out there.... It was one of those weekends where I had several (er, way too many) options...and I hadn't planned to go to any of 'em...he he heh.

Cort, there's a guy running for governor in Texas - his name is Dinky, I think. Saw him on Bill Maher. He's advocating biofuel - says Willie Nelson runs all his farm equipment on it. Sounded good to me. There has to be alternate fuel out there but gas/oil folks aren't going to let it in the market, are they? Not to mention the Saudis..............

About 2 wks ago I paid 262/gal for gas. It was 256 in Orlando yesterday. I think we need to look at Europe to see where it's going from here. Biofuel sounds good to me if they will just get on with it. I remember President Nixon and then President Carter urging the U.S. to get on with an alternative and here we are 40 or more years later in the same rut.

Biofuel really does seem to be a good solution, even to me.

I guess what shocked me more than anything was that, for as long as biofuel has been available in running form, the press hasn't said much about it, that I know of, anyway.

*shrugs*

Lucky for me, the Monte Carlo _was_ offered in diesel format in the early part of the 4th generation (1981, 1982, etc.) ... so....who knows ;).

Way Cool, Cort!

cORT, did I tell you about my next property neighbor. She was 98 y.o. and died in 1998. When she retired in the 60s, she bought a brand new Studebaker. It still sits in her carport with the original paint and upholstery (maybe tires, too because she didn't drive much). Half the world wanted to buy her car while she was still alive but they wanted it for $300 at most and she said she'd rather it sit there and rot before she'd let it go for that price. Since her death, people are still trying but apparently her heir doesn't want to sell it either. Her house has been empty since her death, nobody keeps up the property and I am surprised nobody has tried to steal the car - except we'd know if strangers were around and Miss Sally Sue would probably bark a lot and scare anybody off. I guess each year it increases in value and decreases in its condition.

*chuckles*

Karlynn, that, my dear, is what they call "cheating"...he he he.

Thank you very much for the compliment ;).

*sighs*

And, yes, IF it is mentioned, it'd be on some of the very last pages of the newspaper ... where most people don't look because they've read too much of the rest of the paper and don't want to be bothered by yet another article...heh.

And, no, you didn't tell me about that Studebaker ... hmmm...I may have to finagle a trip to Florida sometime soon....preferably without hurricanes, of course...he he he.
