John -

The editor of our Mended Hearts Chapter Newsletter would like to publish your post on Exercise Limitations. Is this from some medical source? If so, could you provide the source ?

Thanks for the interesting information.

Al,
There is no single source for the exercise information I posted. It is a consolidation of information collected from cardiologists and cardiac rehabilitation specialists. This is mixed in with my own professional training as a biomedical engineer. Please tell the newsletter editor that he/she may certainly quote me, with the caveat that people should always check with their own doctor before beginning any exercise program.

Regards,

hi!
john is right.... i used to teach aerobics and stretching and strengthening classes in my past life (yrs ago) and clearly remember one thing.... avoid the "valsalva manuever". that is exactly what john is referring to when he says "exerting yourself and then holding your breath and releasing it. it's kind of like "bearing down"when you give birth, holding your breath while doing something strenuous. it raises your blood pressure and drops it immediately after.(by the way, this is something they recommended trying when i had palpitations, BUT I DON'T HAVE AN AV!!!!!)
i would ask your cardio about this valsalva thing and see from there.
good luck and, gregg, glad to see you did 8 laps. maybe you'll do 9 tomorrow?
stay well,sylvia
