I chatted this weekend with the husband of a friend. He's a manager with the TSA.
He said -- based on meetings he's been to this week -- that he doubts that carry-on luggage restrictions will ease up. Said that it's frightening that everyday items can be made into an explosive. He cited hydrogen peroxide & Coca-cola. Yes, not everyone flies with hydrogen peroxide, but some people do have a tiny bit for whatever reason. (People who show light-colored cats that tear up sometimes use it to "bleach" the tear stains around their cats' eyes.)
So, for those of you who fly:
Just count on having to check nearly all of your luggage. My friend's husband said that if you use a 7-day Rx container, to also carry a written Rx from the prescribing doctor.
I told him about PT/INR machines some of us use. He suggested having my doctor write a note authorizing me to use (brand name) PT/INR machine and accompanying testing supplies (describe).
Based on what he knows, he said that should clear any future hurdles instituted by the Transportation Safety Administration.

From one of my cat show-related message boards:
Woman flew from US to Denmark recently. Her carry-on was stolen after she got to Denmark, I don't know the circumstances. Had her meds in it. She has heart conditions plus, I think, diabetes. Total of 5 Rxes. A kind-hearted taxi driver took her to an ER where she could get duplicate Rxes.
She didn't have extra Rx slips from her doctor to use in case of emergency.

I would want to prepare for as many possible scenarios as possible: Carry my 7-day meds container in my purse with extra Rx scrips. Carry extra stash of warfarin/whatever in my carry-on. Carry extra stash in my checked luggage.

Just think like a Boy Scout: Be prepared!!!!!!!!

*raises eyebrow*

Ya know ... this is great advice for road travel, too. Sadly, looking back on all of my recent road trips, I've never taken extra prescripts. I have, however, taken extra medication ... as well as my doctor phone #s and other medical information.

Hi,

My wife just came over to Germany for a short vacation with me, and did not have any troubles going through all the new security measures.

I, on the other hand, will experience this personally in 2 weeks when I return to Nashville for a week. I will have all my medication in the original bottles, as well as my Protime INR unit. I plan on taking that in the same backback as my laptop computer.

I will provide an update to this great informational thread for those of us that travel, and let you all know how I make out.

btw... My wife and I had a great time here. I took a few days off, and we went to Amsterdam for one weekend, and then went to Munich and the Alps the following weekend. I don't seem to have any luck in posting pictures on this new VR site, so unfortunately I can no longer share my pictures. I have a feeling that perhaps I am doing something wrong, but am not sure what. I follow all the local steps, but continue to get an error message. And to think... I'm an IT guy... scary!!!

Rob the picture issue has supposedly been fixed. Try again and if it won't go, I'll get on Jonathon to check again. If worse comes to worse, go to your user control panel and select any style in edit options other then the new glass style. They'll go for sure then.

They don't allow 7 day pill containers in carry-ons? Even if there's no liquid?

Hi Karlynn,

I was told that they have to be in the original prescription container. Since I don't take liquids, I do not know the ruling on these. I'll post the results of my trip back to the states in a few weeks.

I was sure glad that I brought my original prescriptions with me on this last trip. I knew this was going to be a long trip, so I took them. Usually I only take 2 or 3 weeks worth in the 7 day pill boxes. Whew! These new rules all went into effect while I was over here. As long as I can get back with my Protime testing unit... I'll be happy.

Ohhh.. btw... I accidently blewup my Protime AC to DC converter. I plugged it into the 220 V current without using my converter to 110. YIKES!!! Fortunately, QAS had one, which I bought, they would not ship ot overseas, but did ship it overnight to my relative, who then overnighted it to me in Germany.

I got used to just plugging it in, as I do my lap top, cell phone charger, or electric razor. All of these can function on either current. But, the Protime, only works on 115V, so I needed a transformer to setup down the European current from 220 V to 115 V. It was valuable lesson learned! That will teach me to read the fine print on the converters without having my reading glasses on!
