Hi all apart from warfarin are any of the members taking other heart meds are what are they used for just interested thanks all

I'm just on warfarin and antibiotics to perhaps prevent the infection from returning. Perhaps it's a life sentence there. Nothing else, I'm still to young yet.

Metoprolol 25 mg 2x daily and 81 mg aspirin daily. Pretty sure it was just a standard protocol thing with my most recent surgery. My first was warfarin only for nearly 19 years. Could be because of the aneurysm, they wanted to better control blood pressure, etc.

Aspirin may be combined with Warfrain. Metoprolol for regulating blood pressure, but discontinued for me since my heart rate is usually lower around 60 and metoprolol makes it go even lower. [h=2]Lisinopril daily as well.[/h]

After surgery, I took metoprolol, Lisinopril and low dose Aspirin as well. I went off the metoprolol within a month or two. I didn't like metoprolol due to some of the side effects and I didn't need it after awhile. After a year my Lisinopril dose was dropped and then dropped again. At 5-years, I take lisinopril and aspirin.

Before surgery, at the advice of the cardiologist, I was taking heart healthy vitamins and fish oil pills. I was told to discontinue those after surgery since my valve was fixed and they can effect my INR. After my INR stabilized, I asked if I should start the vitamins and fish oil again and was told there was no medical need.

Metoprolol 25 mg once a day. Originally the doc prescribed it twice a day but my heart rate was too low. I see him this Friday and will discuss whether I can discontinue it or not. I also take 325 aspirin. Prior to surgery I'd take 81 mg asprin for years. Tissue valve, so no warfarin. I'm on other meds but was on them pre-surgery.

I am diabetic, and also ended up with a pacemaker through surgical complications doing my AVR (apparently a 1 in 10 risk), so some of this medication may not be relevant. But heart wise I am also on aspirin, Nebivolol (a different Beta Blocker to Metoprolol, mentioned by others, which I found exacerbated another condition more than the Nebivolol does), a small dose of Lisinopril, even though I have quite low blood pressure, and Spironolactone. Of these, I was only on Lisinopril prior to surgery.

I have a new cardiologist (#3). He was at the hospital post-surgery and saw me in the hospital on another visit after that so he knew me. He finally explained why I am on some of the meds I'm on. Thought this might be of interest. I have high blood pressure and a tissue mitral valve.

81 mg aspirin, didn't ask why
25 mg Metoprolol ER (have taken Metoprolol TART also, 25 mg twice a day). Cardiologist told me mitral valve patients have a higher risk for Afib so I'm on this to hopefully keep the risk lower. He said "you don't want to have Afib." My first Cardiologist said it was for my blood pressure but I didn't believe that. The surgeon said I would be on it for life but didn't say why. My resting heart rate is around 48. I used to run very long distance and still run but shorter distances.
Valsartan (Diovan) for blood pressure.
Atorvastatin (Lipitor) for cholesterol. Cardiologist says to put less stress on the valve. I have no blockages so he set the LDL goal at 100. Normal people would be 140 and those with arterial disease would be 70.
Warfarin. My new Cardiologist finally told me why I'm on warfarin and it's for life. After my 6 months post-surgery warfarin I went off it. Then within 8 weeks I had shortness of breath. Found out one of my new valve leaflets had thickened and wasn't moving. All the tests were inconclusive. The surgeon saw me and said it might be a blood clot so put me back on warfarin. It cleared up. This cardiologist finally told me it was due to my body reacting to something on the surface of the new valve. Maybe my next new valve will not have this issue.

Hope this help others with some reasons that we take some of these meds.

Martin
