hi all members quick question my mother is 3 years post op after mechanical heart valve surgery ,she as abrial fib,and is still taking medication for this ,is this common after valve surgery thanks

Hi. Since your mom has a mechanical valve it will be necessary for her to take an anti-coagulant(coumadin, wafarin, etc) for her lifetime to prevent blood clots from forming on the valve. That drug will also be protection against clots forming due to the a-fib. Other meds may be required based on her personal diagnosis. She should review her meds periodically with her physicians.

It's a great question and k know everyone is very unique and individual as far as meds etc go but l get very concerned about afib as l am only 5 weeks out but l will say this, my heart is so loud and strong and pounding in my head and is really all over the map slow and normal and then just goes on a tangent for what seem like know reason even in rest position or with the slightest of movement or exertion. I don't know what is or what would be considered even a little normal at thus point. I am on several meds including beta blockers. . Is that going to stop or prevent heart attack. . I don't if lm safe in all honesty with out being obsessive of course or to hypersensitive. I have felt like this since post op it just seems to get louder and faster everyday .

5 weeks is still pretty early. your heart needs to adjust with the new hardware and also will settle due to the trauma. i know it's hard especially when it's acting up but trust it's all part of the process. fwiw, my cardio told me that the hearts electrical function is all disturbed and physically out of shape. reconditioning and time will do it wonders.

Thx you tsanjose that makes sence for sure .. trama sometimes l think that's an understatement. I don't know why l so underestimated the sure pain and tramatic experience of it all.
