This memorial, written on a scrap of leather and attached to a fence near El Santuario de Chimayo stopped me in my tracks. It is a loving tribute of a child to parents long deceased. A solemn message hung in a sacred place.
I made the picture as large as I could within the posting limitations. I have the advantage of a bigger picture--They actually died about 5 years apart.
One of the things I love about northern New Mexico is the strength of the local culture. This is an area of long-standing poverty. People don't have the money for marble slabs. In addition, a location near the church is very important. The author wanted a memorial near the church, but probably had little in the way of personal wealth. I love the way the problem was solved.
