Joe had his cardiology appointment today. It was an excellent appointment. His metabolic panel shows all normal ranges, his CBC is close to normal, his CHF is under very good control, his fluid is non-existent, legs and ankles are down to the bone.

Walking from the hospital to the car and back to the car again, there is a very long ramp which connects the parking garage and the hospital, it has a long incline. In January, Joe couldn't walk to the bathroom at home without being short of breath, this was from pulmonary hypertension. Tracleer, Imdur and Procrit have worked miracles. Today he had no trouble at all walking that long incline, and he is not on any oxygen.

This has been some year for my husband. A year ago, Joe was fighting for his life after a massive bleed-out (gallbladder surgery). It took 33 units of blood products to stanch the bleed. And he had to have a second operation to take the fluid pressure off his heart. He was sent home from the hospital in shock with a systolic blood pressure of 80. His stomach was swollen to gigantic proportions. He normally has a 33 waist. Then it was 45. He had drain bags hanging from his stomach. It took months and months to get over that. He also developed a very high temp (106.7) which landed him back in the hospital.

Then in December, his CHF, pulmonary hypertension, anemia and kidney failure de-compensated. His Troponin levels were elevated. He became very, very ill. He spent a month in the large teaching hospital near us.

Magically, his cardiologist/pulmonary hypertension specialist was able to turn his health around, and now he is feeling much better than he has felt in a very long time.

Amazingly, throughout all of this his valves stayed OK, and are working well.

So it has been a terribly scary year with enormous ups and downs, and to have such a good result after such terrible happenings, is something I can hardly describe.

What a difference a year makes. It shows just how resilient human beings are.

Nancy, we have walked a long path with you and Joe and miracle of miracles, he has made it through every time. There were times when we just held out breath. We always knew if you didn't show up for a day, there was trouble - but the two of you have stuck right in there, walked the hard roads, and always come out on the good side. God bless both of you.

That's wonderful Nancy. I am happy things are on the upswing for you both. The way I figure it....the "black cloud" lifts at some point.

Enjoy your sunshine. You both deserve a break.

Congratulations to Joe and yourself on his improved health. I'm sure he wouldn't be able to handle all that without your ever-present support Nancy.

It's been a rough ride for your family over the past couple of years, I hope that the future sees more stability for you both.

Hi Nancy

Hi Nancy

How wonderful

How wonderful

This is wonderful news about your hubby. Of course, since I came on board so recently, I hadn't heard all the awful details.

Resiliency, yes; miracles and magic, yes; but I can't help but think that the primary reason he made it and made it well is because of you.

And you are such a source of strength and knowledge and good judgment for us here; what would we do without you, Nancy?

Congratulations.

Nancy, you were the first one to welcome me to the site. Since then, we have all become a family. I have admired Joe, and will always admire Joe for his long fights. He just never gives up. I am so glad that he feels good now. You've done a wonderful job taking care of Joe, and keeping us updated. Tell Joe hello from me, and please accept this cyber hug from me to you.

hi nancy!
what a wonderful post!!! i am sooo thrilled that joe is doing so well. it has been such a difficult year for the both of you and i must be honest, there were times i was nervous to read some of your posts for fear of more bad news.
but, as you said, humans are resilient, miracles happen, and i believe God watches over us.
you are a remarkable anchor in joe's life. you are an inspiration to us all, besides the fact that you are our in-house nurse.
i cannot thank you enough for all you 've done for all of us. please let joe know that i am so happy that you are both well.
wishing you only the best, sylvia

That's WONDERFUL and AMAZING GOOD NEWS Nancy.

You and Joe are an inspiration to all of us. I'm doing better now that I'm taking Lasix regularly but still don't know or understand what is causing the fluid buildup. I've obtained all of my Echo Reports for the last 4 years and see some 'interesting' trends that I hope to have explained as soon as I can get referred to another Cardiologist and / or Internist.

In the mean time, Joe's story is an inspiration to NEVER GIVE UP !

Thanks for sharing it with us.

I'm continually amazed at the both of you. Joe for having to go through so much and pulling through each time and you for your never ceasing efforts to look out for his welfare. I know I wished I had you to bat for me when I was laying there in a vegetative state. My wife did as well as she could, all things considered, but she could use your tenacity in getting them to move.

Congratulations to the both of you!

Nancy, It makes us feel so good to hear of Joe's progress and your wonderful caring and nurturing of him. I'm continually amazed at what the combination of faith and tenacity can accomplish.

May God Bless You with many more wondrous days ahead!

Nancy,

I think Georgia hit the nail on the head.... ?Resiliency, yes; miracles and magic, yes; but I can?t help but think that the primary reason he made it and made it well is because of you?

I have nothing more to add to what has already been said. I'll just say it's great news to hear from my fellow New Yorker's!
