One of our members (RCB) had his first valve put in on October 31, 1960 when he was 11 years old. In September 1960 there was an article in a medical journal stating that nobody who had received a mechanical valve had lived more than one month. His first valve was designed to last a month or so but it lasted several years. Then he got a Starr-Edwards that lasted way beyond its expected time. When that one wore out it caused him to have a stroke. Now he has worn out his third valve. This is what he wrote to me today,
I at the cleveland clinic. Hard to get on the computer-one for about two hundred pt. and their guests. Guest spend all time playing card games.
Things are in chaos here. I was scheduled for today- move to tomorrow because my INR is still at 1.7
(stop warfarin on Saturday)- cancelled tomorrow because of Dr. Pettersson is booked for emergency surgeries to do- can't do it Friday because of Big medical conference at cc- no weekend surgeries-
Monday is a holiday-hope for Tuesday. Can't go home because of heprin drip. Got the picture!!!!!
MY wife is stuck in a $100/night hotel room.
