One of our members (RCB) had his first valve put in on October 31, 1960 when he was 11 years old. In September 1960 there was an article in a medical journal stating that nobody who had received a mechanical valve had lived more than one month. His first valve was designed to last a month or so but it lasted several years. Then he got a Starr-Edwards that lasted way beyond its expected time. When that one wore out it caused him to have a stroke. Now he has worn out his third valve. This is what he wrote to me today,
I at the cleveland clinic. Hard to get on the computer-one for about two hundred pt. and their guests. Guest spend all time playing card games.
Things are in chaos here. I was scheduled for today- move to tomorrow because my INR is still at 1.7

I bet he's chomping at the bit big time. He was a bit frazzled going in and with all this happening, I'm sure he's ready to spiral out of control.

Thanks Al, I'll stop and pick one up today to get in the mail. I'm pretty concerned with the outcome of this surgery for him. It's certainly high risk and not run of the mill, as if any of them are.

Al,
What a sweetie you are to let us know about RCB's situation. I'll get a card in the mail today!
Sue

It went out in the morning mail. Last January when I was going through a rough time several members sent me cards. I treasure everyone of them. The opportunity to do the same for someone else has brightened my day.

Wonderful idea!!

Wonderful idea!!

Thanks for the address, Al. What a great way to cheer Robert up! Putting mine in the mail tomorrow.

Bob's friend Bill says that the operation is scheduled for 6-1-04. So Bob will be there long enough to still receive more cards.

This is the latest from Bob's friend Bill
i just talked to olga and the operation went well and they have him in ICU for now.
he is expected to sleep for several more hours and will be unable to talk for a few days.
i guess there are tubes involved.

otherwise, i will get an update some time tomorrow.

till then,
bill

Bill is the guy who took the old valve pictures on my website

Bob said that he would have Bill take pictures of the valves that were taken out today.
