I know this is last minute, but prayers are requested and will be greatly appreciated. A new member posted recently on PDHeart introducing her 9 year old daughter Amy who is undergoing her 2nd MVR on the 11th, first case, at the University of Michigan with Dr. Bove.

Her mom relayed a bit of Amy's medical history. Amy had a valve repair as an infant, and it lasted five years. She had her first mitral valve replacement April 12th, 2004. (Talk about a small world!!! Amy's mom and I just discovered that Amy and Katie were roommates following their April surgeries - Katie's repair was the 13th!) Now, sadly, due to pannus overgrowth, Amy is having to undergo another valve replacement. This is so totally unfair! You put up with the coumadin, the blood draws, and the occasional scares that accompany a mechanical valve just so you can avoid putting your kid through another OHS...................and then this crap happens - something completely out of anyone's control, but it happened all the same.......................:(

This will be Amy's 3rd OHS, so prayers will be greatly appreciated. I told Amy's mom about VR, but she is a bit overwhelmed at the moment. Hopefully, she will join us later when life is a bit less hectic; thus, I am requesting prayers on her behalf. Hugs. J.

Janet,

Please advise Amy's mother that the On-X Valves have a 'shield' to prevent (or at least reduce) the danger of Pannus overgrowth. Contact On-X for more details.

I think her surgey is in a couple hours

I put Amy on the calendar, and hopefully members will see it and be able to offer prayers and support not only today but also throughout the recovery process.
Thank you Janet for letting us know so we can try to help.

My thoughts are most definately with them!!! Will be checking in for an update later...

Janet please take no offense to this, but see if you can't get these people to become members over here as well. To me, it's odd that we are saying prayers and rooting for those on other sites when we have many right here. Plus it's nice to see new members.

Sending prayers. What is pannus overgrowth anyway? Is it similar to Arlyss husband who had the valve strands?

My thoughts and prayers are with them! I hope this next surgery lasts a lot longer!!

Fantastic news!!!

Fantastic news!!!

You guys must have done the trick and thank you so much. I'm thrilled to say that Amy sailed through surgery, was out by 1 PM, off the vent by 5 PM and was even trying to sit up. Amazing! She does have some arrythmia problems as expected but hope that those will get back to normal soon. Please keep her in your prayers for a continued smooth recovery. And yes, hopefully, this one will last much, much longer.

Savysmom, I'm still not sure that I completely understand what pannus overgrowth is ..........I did research it, but am still somewhat befuddled myself. Might be a good topic for a new thread...........

Al, thanks so much. PMed you.

Ross, no offense at all. I know what you mean. I truly think we might see Debbie on here in the future, but we just made the reconnection Monday and course they admitted Amy yesterday to start her on a heparin drip...........so time was a bit tight. Believe me, I try not to abuse the prayer requests, but this one hit a bit close to home............ It's so strange. I distinctly remember the coumadin nurse giving them all their instructions on coumadin, the INR range, etc., etc that April day three years ago. We had just had our valve repair and I was so grateful that it was them going through that and not us...........horrible of me, I know. Guess God got me back for that one...............sigh! Little did I know that a mere 15 months later we would be getting the same coumadin song and dance routine from the same coumadin nurse................ A rather severe lesson in humility, I'd say.

Anyway, thank you all so very, very much. Your prayers truly helped. Hugs. J.

Glad to hear Amy is doing well. Thanks for the update.

BTW - My second and third OHS were due to pannus ingrowth. My understanding is it is scar tissue that develops after surgery and encroaches on the leaflets causing them to stick open or shut - either a huge problem. There may be a more clinical description than scar tissue but that is my story and I am sticking to it.;) :D ;) :D

Geebee, I'm curious, do you know if they did something different in your last surgery that helped so so far it hasn't happened again (knocking on wood really hard here) or if it is more of a mater of baically luck? trying to make sure I cover as many questions I can possibley think of for my "talk to the surgeon list" so any help is appreciated, lyn

awww.. bless her little heart.. so glad she made it through so well:)

Please don't shoot me for asking, but did she receive a SECOND Carbomedics Valve (i.e. the same as the one that failed due to pannus growth in 3 years)?

If so, I can't help but wonder what, if anything, the surgeon did to prevent a similar outcome this time around.

Sorry for being so 'blunt'.
