Hello,

I am now 9 days old and want to describe my experience so that others would know what to expect.

Procedure: Bentall, started on February 27, 2013, 6 am.

Day 1, recovery. You feel that you breathe with remarkable hardness. (In fact, it is a machine breathes instead of you). You cannot speak and don't see much (probably only can differ light from darkness). However, you are still on sedatives, so this is not as scary as it should be, but rather unpleasant. After a while they remove the tube from your lungs, and you can breathe yourself.

Day 1, later. The main thing: THIRST! After several hours they start to give you some ice which tastes really really really good. But not enough.

Day 1, total grade: very bad

Day 2. You are weak, with lots of tubes in you, unable to change a position in bed, unable to touch your eye with your hand if there is a tear. They move you once per 2 hours which is too long. Part of the time you just suffer waiting till you will be moved. You cannot sleep long enough or deep enough. You start to curse yourself for agreeing to this surgery. Total grade: very bad.

Day 3. You start walking at the corridor. You are able to touch your face. But no appetite, and you are nauseated from almost any food. But the nurse wants you to eat, so ordering a food and trying to eat some is this and the next day's torture. You are able to slightly change your position in bed, and finally sleep more. You start to laugh. Total grade: bad

Days 4-6: Some appetite starts to appear. You now read books, play computer games etc. Total grade: tolerable, or good, compating to the previous day. The worst thing was the exercise with the incentive spirometer which caused me to cough.

Glad everything went well and you're back on the road to recovery. Everyone's recovery is different...some people jump right back, while others, like me, take longer. The great thing is, every day you will see an improvement from the day before, so pace yourself and give yourself time to heal.

Take care and stay well! :)

So happy things are getting better for you.
We are all so different.

Less than 24 hours post op my second OHS, I was up, ate half a turkey sandwich, was wheeled in wheelchair to step down from CICU and then walked a bit with my nurse and DH. I had four chest tubes in place but my nurse put the containers on a wheelchair and had me hold the handles.

There is no way to know how each of us will go through this event but we all need to recognize it is very different for each of us.

We all do the best we can and are grateful for the good care we receive from these fine heart centers.

Wishing you a smooth, bump free recovery.

Ok, if you want to know:

Now I am 2 monthes after the surgery.

2 weeks after the surgery: lost totally 10lbs compating to my preoperative weight (172 -> 162), which is good. Then my weight stabilized at this level.

2.5 weeks after the surgery: the first atrial flutter attack. Treated with diltiazem, increased metoprolol to 100mg.

2.5-4.5 weeks after the surgery: AF attacks every several days, terminated by themselves after 1-30 minutes.

4.5 weeks after the surgery: the doctor replaced metoprolol tartrate by extended release metoprolol. No more AF attacks

End of the first month: regained my ability to walk fast. Walking about 3 miles a day.

Middle of the second month: able to run about 50 m (150 feet).

End of the second month: able to run half a mile and probably more.

Still have a strong cough.
Still have a heart rate of 90-100. Before the surgery, it was 65. BP about 105:80, before the surgery was about the same.
