Hi all - first post on here :)

Had my Aortic Valve replaced 6 weeks ago with a On-X mechanical one. All gone really well, alot better than we expected (was out of bed on day 2 and walked from ICU to the ward!). Home recovery has been great - no major pain nor discomfort...

Had my Post-Op checkup with the Surgeon last week (5 weeks PO) and he said to stop all the medication (apart from the Warfarin), which I thought was great news/progress... however this last week my heart beat has been rather strange on the odd occasion. Missing beats, racing, slowing down. Been to the Doctors and they said all is normal, part of the healing process and not to worry (unless accompanied by pain, then straight to A&E!). Blood Pressure perfectly good, so obviously not effecting things...

Any one else had this, and how long does it last for?

Doc says I can take the odd Biprosolo if it continues, but if its a natural part of the healing I prefer to be off the medication and let it get on with healing!

Thanks all

Gary

(is there anywhere on this forum to see where people live - would like to see if any one is local to me?)

you heart needs help and time for healing. I am taking metopropol and lisinopril both drugs slow down your heart and regulate it's rhythm. At this point your heart needs all the help it can get.

Bisoprolol is a good beta blocker for heart rhythm issues. Rhythm issues are common after surgery, may continue for some time. Only you can decide if you need the meds or not, but during the healing process, I would take them to give my heart a rest. I took a beta blocker and flecanaide post op for SVT for about six months, then slowly withdrew along with the beta blocker. Your not signed on to the meds for life unless your body needs them.

Last February, I was put on Bisoprolol for arrythmia, best decision I made. I slept better, I felt better overall. I slowly withdrew the meds over the summer and have had no issues since. If it becomes an issue again, I would not hesitate to contact my EP and resume meds. That's how much of a difference they have made for me. There's a time and place for meds, don't be afraid to take them.

Hello Gary.

I`m 3 weeks post op re-do Tricuspid valve replacement, right atrium reduction & full maze procedure.

I was doing well first 9 days post surgery 70bpm, with good sinus rhythm(without beta blocker). The day I got home my heart rate suddenly shot upto 130 bpm for 3/4 hours so I started re-taking my bisoprolol. My heart then went back to 75bpm. Over the last week I`ve had several issues of my heart racing for 30 mins, then beating slow rate 58bpm then gong back to 75bpm. Also had lots of skipped beats episodes. Yesterday, again my HR shot up to 130bpm for 4 hours then went down to 98bpm and I`m still on 98bpm. I rang the heart recovery advice line and the medic told me all sounds pretty normal and I`ve proberly got some temporary atrial flutter due to all the ska tissue healing and the electrical system getting use to its new pathways, it will all settle down over time.

Initially I was gutted because the maze procedure I had suppose to eliminate heart rhythm issues. But I feel reassured now and my heart will settle down over the weeks ahead. If I still have these issues in 6 months I`ll be worried more.

Hope all goes well for you Gary.

Lee

hi gary, i live in yorkshire, yea sounds like your going through what a lot do, usually settles down in time, i am on bisoprolol for rhythm issues and have been since op, keeps it under control but still get pesky pvcs sometimes,

Lee: How are you measuring your heartbeat????? I had A-Fib around the 3-4 week mark but never knew it. I was having a lot of coughing issues and went to see my Dr. who determined I was in A-Fib. I had no clue as I felt normal.

Hi all -thanks for replies. Does appear to be a common thing.

All been normal for the last few days, so not had to take the Biprosolo as yet.

Back to work soon :-( but quick week away before then :)
