My husband's AVR was on Oct. 3rd. He started back to work part-time this week. Our family doctor okayed driving last week and returning to work part-time this week. He had minimally invasive surgery and it sure seems like the way to go if possible. His sleeping is improving but he still has a ways to go to get back to normal. I just thought I'd post the good news and help relive some pre-op peoples nervousness. I still worry about him though. I'm worried he's going to overdue it.

Hey Shelly,
Do keep an eye on him.
I'm 7 months post-op and I over did it. It landed me in the hospital for 3 days, due to low BP.
Sit on him if you have to if you think he's over doing it. he'll love the attention
:D :D

Hi Shelly! How grand for your husband to be in such great shape post op. That is really fabulous. That minimally invasive procedure is definitely a great way to go. For us with the full sternotomy...it is that healing that takes so darn long. And the pain meds that go along with that healing keep us down, too. That isn't to say that you shouldn't keep an eye on him. Chances are, though, that his own body will tell him when he's overdone it. Our bodies have a way of letting us know....just keep an eye on him and see that he listens to himself!! ;)

Best wishes!

Wow great to hear your husband is doing so well, I had the minimally invasive too. Saw my cardiologist yesterday, and I am doing well. Its funny how different surgeions instructions are so different. Dr Patracek at vanderbilt university states I should not drive for 8 weeks, he states I could drive physically at around 4 weeks or so but the danger of getting into a wreck or fender bender would possible rip out the area in my chest.

I could not work at this stage, I still need some pain medication especially in the afternoon,,, and my energy level seems good first thing (like right now) but its weird I hit a wall, and need to rest. I seem to get emotional too. So your husband may feel good but after a few hours may not. I think for some people to return to their regular life makes on feel normal again.

wow shelly! I hope my doc doesn't tell me it's ok to go back to work after 3 weeks! I'm 12 days out now, and can't even imagine driving or working.
