I am having my teeth cleaned on Monday with surgery the following Thursday.
I am taking the anitbotics four hours before.
Does anyone think this is too close to the surgery date to have the cleaning?

Why are you taking the antibiotics 4 hours before!? It is better if you take them 1 hour before only as the effect of antibiotics stays 12 hrs...so do not waste three hours of protection in vain! Just my 2 cents thought!

I think you are OK with the surgery and cleaning dates.

As someone who is not even 2 weeks post surgery and has a sore tooth (grrr) this is interesting stuff. Apparently here in the UK the latest NICE (National Institute for Clinical Excellence) guidelines state that no antibiotic cover is required. I just rang the hospital discharge advice hotline to check this, and they checked with their dentist, and the no antibiotic rule is correct. Scary stuff!

Not
IV but definitely antibiotics. AHA has an SBE prophylaxis list on their web site

Here in the states, The American Heart Association changed their guidelines. If you had any type of heart murmur, stenosis or valve replacement, you needed the standard antibiotic before, and after dental procedures. The NEW revised guidelines apply to people that are at the greatest risk, of the most serious outcome, such as endocarditis. Those people that have had AVR ARE DEFINITELY at a greater risk!

I did confirm this with my cardiologist also. I will be having more dental work in the near future, and believe me I WILL be taking an antibiotic. I would request this for dental work. It's YOUR HEALTH, and YOUR BODY.

Best regards

I don't know how much influence the patient has under your health care system but I would be seeking a doctor who would prescribe amoxycillan for all dental work. I would be unwilling to take the risk. In the States, Tissue valve replacement is an exception that requires antibiotics under AHA new guidelines for premedicating.

Agreed, I'm seeing my general practitioner later in the week and I'll be asking her to prescribe some antibiotics to take pre/post dental work. It's all well and good for government agencies to make these decisions, but its not their body thats on the line so I'll be insisting on antibiotics.

Pre-med is the key

Pre-med is the key

I ALWAYS take my antibiotics. Yes, the dentist scares me too as it likely caused my first heart valve to mess up back in 2001.
