Treating myself before aortic valve replacement?

I'd ask your Cardiologist and/or Surgeon.

Traveling to a different time zone, when to take warfarin

I agree. It is not necessary to micro-manage dosing to a specific time each day. Just get in the habit of taking your dose at about the same time each day or nite........and try to not miss or double up a dose. Get a seven day pill box!

Endocarditis from a drop of blood?

It is that! In the beginning of OHS for valve replacement(1960s-70s), my doctors or dentists never stressed any need for antibiotics before invasive dental work and I never took any. That meant I did not pre-medicate before dental work for the first 20-25 years.........with no problem. For...

Longest period known before aortic valve replacement needed

I doubt they would alarm my parents back in the 1930s since there was no way to fix the problem. Valve replacement, where the heart had to be stopped, was not done until the invention of the "heart/lung machine".......in the late 1950s. The first successful valve was implanted in 1960.

Longest period known before aortic valve replacement needed

When I was born, in 1936, my parents were told I had a "heart murmur". I lived a normal childhood, teenage, and young adult life without treatment or limitations......surgery was not an option in those days. When I was 30 and in my final year in college I felt unwell and went to the student...

PDF from STS What to expect after OHS

Take his recovery "slow and easy" and do not try to "eat the entire elephant in one sitting". It seems that his recovery is going along smoothly and for that be grateful. If he is like the majority of us, he will be up and living a normal life for many, many years. The issues he might...

    Surgery date set!!!

Sounds like a typical normal post-op recovery to me😋.

60 y/o Female St Jude Mitral valve

I was also using INRatio during that time. After the notice of the recall I used up my small supply of strips and put the meter in the garbage. After using the Coaguchek XS for several years at home, I have now gone to the INR clinic operated by my cardio. For me, it is much simpler and...

12 week update: Work in process

Glad things are working out for you. It sounds as tho you have taken an around about way to get to "normal". I hope you have smoother sailing now

    Surgery date set!!!

St. Jude has a longer history and a more realistic INR protocol.

Gross Hematuria - blood in urine

I have had noticeable red/brown urine color, due to low INR, twice over my time on warfarin but have never experienced anything like you describe. Hopefully, your PCP can find the source.

    Medtronic Freestyle Root Bioprosthesis

Wendel, you joined this forum Dec. 28, 2023 asking for advice....and, seemingly disappeared in early January, 2024. Now you reappear after your surgery asking for testimonials from other very young people, with tissue valves. You are not likely to find many. You told us that you were 38...

On- X valve is superior to outdated one like st jude and ATS

I have always been a smaller man....5'9", l56 lbs. After only a few months I could not consciously hear my valve and I don't think others could hear it either. I would think that my valve would actually generate more noise than the newer style. Mine is a little hard plastic ball that bounces...

On- X valve is superior to outdated one like st jude and ATS

I also drop like a rock if I hold a full dose. It's been a long time since I held two doses, but I believe that took me uncomfortably close to 1.0 as well. I normally make any changes in 1/2 dose increments although I have occasionally held a full dose. Experience has taught me to make my...

On- X valve is superior to outdated one like st jude and ATS

😮......Using the chart I showed in my earlier post a PT of 60 would be an INR of 6.8. That surely would get the doctors attention, but the bubble wrap might have been a little overkill;). Do you recall what the PT was on Monday? I'm surprised that your cardio was still using PT in 1998. I...

    Medtronic Freestyle Root Bioprosthesis

My birth yr.... 1936 My valve was implanted.....Aug. 1967. s/n 178-UNK. Contact Edwards Lifesciences for additional info. Looked into Guinness several years ago. Their charge to validate record date was $800. Not worth it. I've posted on this Forum since 2007 (17 years with the same story)...

On- X valve is superior to outdated one like st jude and ATS

Below is the relationship of PT(clotting time) to INR* INR......PT(seconds) 1.0.........12 (Non-anticoagulated normal in seconds) 1.5.........17 2.0.........21 2.5.........26 3.0.........30 3.5.........34 For 50 of my 57 years on Warfarin I have maintained an INR of 2.5-3.5 (26-34...

    Medtronic Freestyle Root Bioprosthesis

Why do I sense some "buyer's remorse" in your post? You made the decision! BTW, as far as quality of life is concerned.....I've had a very good quality of life for 57+ years, not 1 with my ancient mechanical valve.

    Question regarding life on anti-coagulants

Excessive bleeding from small cuts is not a problem. Normally it will just take a few more seconds to stop the bleeding and simple first aid with a bandaid will stop any bleeding. Like Chuck C posted "we learn to be a little more careful" when handling sharp objects.
