My first powerlifting competition date is set - 9/22/2012

Amazing...not only that you are doing this 6 mos. post op, but add to that a lift time personal best on the squat. Congratulations!

New to the board and AVR

Welcome..former Marine here...thanks for your service. As far as running the 10 miler, I could see it as a possibility, but woud expect that you would have to do a run/ walk combo. Every person is different in terms of recovery, but I did not start running until 8 weeks post op...and that was...

First attempt at running since surgery

Like Tom said, it sounds like you are doing pretty well. Just to put it in perspective, prior to surgery, I ran several sub-3 marathons and was running 5ks in the low 18s. My normal general aerobic pace was around 7:30 min miles. Anyway, I did my first run 8 weeks post op and it was a shock...

I almost forgot my First Anniversary...

Congratulations! "Almost forgot about it" remember of a Barbara Walters special on heart surgery a few months back. She was interviewing somebody (I cannot remember who) and they said that a good guideline to know when you are recovered is when you are no longer thinking about it.

    Heavy lifting post surgery......

That does not seem reasonable unless there is some other underlying condition that they are being cautious about. Like others, I had all my restrictions removed about 6 months after surgery. I was running pretty hard...until I messed up my foot last summer. Decided to get back into weight...

Is it okay to get your heart rate up?

My unscientific opinion (form one tissue valver to another) would be to go ahead. Once I was told I had no more restrictions, I took that to mean NO restrictions. My cardiologist knew my running history (and was a marathoner as well) and what my intentions were once I could stat running again...

Surgery 7-31-2012 St. Vincent Hospital Indianpolis, IN

The only amount of significant pain I remember is the first time I sneezed. Get yourself a good pillow to hold against your chest. I did have some good pain management, so I'm sure that contributed to minimal pain. The most discomfort I experienced was for the first few hours when I was...

    Fear of routine appointments

Yep..terrified to the point that anytime I do into any doctors appointment my blood pressure goes through the roof. Fortunately my Cardiologist understands this and has asked me to monitor it regularly at home.

    does this happen to you?

I did not hold my breath, but did notice a very strong heartbeat. I remember others noticing that as well when they were recovering.

    Rehab - Do or Not?

I did not go through rehab, but it seems the people that have gone through it have not regretted it. Prior to surgery, I was a pretty active runner and the doctor interpreted that as I know my body and my limits and told me I would be bored at rehab, so i did not go through it. It also helped...

I have not done it but a friend of mine had great success with it. He spoke very highly of it.
