    Cautionary tale Re holiday caffein!

I probably drink far less caffeine when I am not at home and come to think of it, when I stay with my daughter I find that I sleep far better than at home, hmmm, perhaps time to look at my strong tea consumption. When I am at my daughter's home I normally do not have any tea at all, just water.

discussing mechanical valve brands with your surgeon?

The evening before my surgery the surgeon came to see me and told me he wouldn't know until I was on the table as to whether it was one or two valves, they would do a TOE then decide. He just asked if I wanted tissue or mechanical, no brands mentioned. At 57 I opted for mechanical so as to...

How many of you were smokers?

Having been a smoker myself I do understand but also think that you have to WANT to give up smoking, not just know that you OUGHT to. http://whyquit.com/whyquit/A_Benefits_Time_Table.html This gives you the timetable for your body's responses to giving up smoking.

    Reasurring - MedicAlert bracelet

For those of you who are NOT squeamish in regards to serious eye injuries, simulated or not, I will post a link to a photograph of my facial injuries. WARNING although it is simulated it is quite revolting. http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e393/sue943/General/Picture706.jpg

    Reasurring - MedicAlert bracelet

This morning I took part in a simulated major incident in which I was a casualty. My briefing was that I was unconscious, and was very seriously injured. When the ambulance arrived at the hospital I was wheeled into the A&E Department then quickly moved into 'Resus' since I was so badly...

    New to site

I had vegetation breaking off and suffered a stroke as a result. I am not reading this the same way as Lyn, I thought you were saying that your aortic valve is tricuspid (the normal situation) rather than bicuspid. Perhaps I am the one reading it incorrectly. Regardless of that, I am also...

Today is my valve birthday, five years and counting. I am feeling fine and exercising regularly, all in all I am much healthier now than before I first became ill with endocarditis.

    Bloody Urine - What color(s)?

When I had blood in my urine, not related to warfarin, my urine was similar to 'ruby grapefruit juice', definite pinkish/red hue and very obviously blood.

Families and how they are affected

I felt, and still do, feel rotten about my poor daughter. She had just started a new job then a week later I had a stroke, then my mother died next day. Fast forward a couple of weeks and I had been airlifted to England with endocarditis with my mitral and aortic valves getting into a serious...

ON-X valve noise vs ATS valve noise

I have two ATS valves and very rarely hear them, nor does anyone else without a stethoscope.

Does receiving professional massage affect INR?

I found this... Drug interactions may occur with some essential oils. If one is taking a drug with a narrow therapeutic index requiring regular blood tests to check the level, do not use essential oils without guidance. Many essential oils thin the blood. If you are on Plavix®/clopidogrel or...

    Can we talk dollars?

Oh boy am I glad that I don't live in the US! Mitral and Aortic valve replacements, including angiogram pre-op, in a private hospital cost my insurers £27,274.78 which converts to $39,338.40. That included eleven days in hospital and the food was delicious. Same surgeon and cardiologist in an...

Does receiving professional massage affect INR?

One point about massage, are they using oils and potions as in aromatherapy massage? If so check what is being used as they are absorbed by the skin and into the bloodstream - someone here had some bathoil (camomile) and she had bleeding issues after just a few baths using it.
