    INR for mechanical AV

Hi, OK, here is my response to your concerns. I have had 2 mechanical valves within the last 12 years. My first was a St Judes, my second is an On-X. My first didn't fail, but my body rejected it by building panus tissue under the valve, and blocking the blood flow. The On-X has a newer...

    INR Ranges

Hi, The range for my Aortic valve, set by my doctors, is 2-3. It is less than the Mitral valve recommended ranges because there is a stronger force of blood flow through the aortic valve, than the mitral. Thus the chance of clotting around the aortic valve is a bit less than the mitral...

On-X with Graft - Any complaints on the Graft ?

I have had my aortic On-X for 2 1/2 yrs now. My surgeon constructed his own graft when he installed my valve. So far, no issues with the valve or graft.

    The sound in my valve

Hi bradvo, Good to hear that all is ok. It would appear they followed standard procedure by telling you to go to the ER for the workup. But your doctor not seeing you or even talking to you over the phone must be disappointing. Perhaps he was not in clinic that day, and was preforming some...

You're on Warfarin, a disaster hits, You can no longer obtain it, What can you do?

This was a serious inquiry, at least for me. Is there a substitute that can be taken in the event that one can no longer obtain warfarin? The fact it that an event could happen, even at a regional level. It may even be temporary, let's just say 30 days, but you do not have enough to carry you...

    Tattoos and Warafin

Hi Ovie, The thing I would look into regarding a tattoo is the stability of the colors. I have heard that the ink colors do not take as well if you are on Warfarin. Good thinking with the Medic alert tatt. In my case, I just figure I already wear a large enough alert, that being the scar...

    Ticking Time Bomb

I have found that if I am standing in a crowded elevator, or with some people in a quiet area, they can hear it. Also, if I open my mouth as if yawning, it amplifies the sound. This is fun to do at times, and I get a kick out looking at some of the peoples expressions.

On-X Valve Study - Updated (sorry if its been posted already)

Thanks for clearing that up Dan. I have an On-X, nice to know that the new IFU could be 1.5 - 2.0. I'd use that as a safety factor personally, as I'd really feel more comfortable with my INR around 2.5 I don't buy into the the line we valvers hear so often, that your mechanical valve will...

On-X Valve Study - Updated (sorry if its been posted already)

The PROACT results, the IFU modification (when approved), and the accompanying benefit of reduced bleeding events for patients receiving the On-X aortic valve are extremely meaningful for patients needing prosthetic valves,” said Clyde Baker, On-X Life Technologies CEO. “Younger aortic heart...

    Got a shocker today

Hi Cannon, Your story sounds so familiar to mine. I too had severe aortic stenosis, pannus buildup around the valve, after 10 yrs with my original SJ mechanical valve. Wasn't even aware of it, but when I went into my annual checkup, my doctor told me, and that he would guess that I had between...

    Donating blood while on coumadin

I would be leary of that. Each person that would donate blood while on Coumadin would have different INR levels! Can you imagine trying to regulate and stablize that mix!

    Donating blood while on coumadin

I totally agree with you P-time. I can understand why folks who always donated would like to continue doing so, BUT, that could be deadly to the recipient, and selfish of the donor, just to feel good about helping others in need. Life changing events happen to us all, so if someone who used to...

    Coumadin & having a colonoscopy

I believe that they, the doctor / pharmacist, also adjust the amount of Heparin dose prescribed based upon your body weight. Each injection needle should only contain the amount of Heparin based upon their weight dosing chart recommendation. Usually when you pick up your Heparin prescription...

    Coumadin & having a colonoscopy

Hi Loretta, When I had the procedure, I had to come off the Coumadin, and then bridge with Heparin. I had no issues other than having to give myself a shot in the stomach twice a day for a week. Rob
