High Volume Endurance Training and Tissue/Mechanical Valves...

I'm 4 months AVR post-op with On-X mechanical valve, and have been hitting 85%-100% MHR during my 1-hour running sessions for > 1 month now. For the last couple of weeks though, I feel like I'm getting plateaued at ~6.25 mph pace (i.e. 10km/hr) but I'm more than happy with that :) I used to...

    Bicuspid aneurysm in Indian patient

Please follow the same global criteria. Race-based thresholds haven’t been defined to the best of my knowledge. Genetic testing to look for such markers seem to be in development and currently not validated or useful at all. Please follow existing global practices.

12 week update: Work in process

UPDATE: My echo last week (3.5 months post-op) is all normal. EF is now 55-60%, no pericardial effusion etc. All concerns noted earlier are resolved. Once again, thanks for everyone's help, concerns and attention :-)

    Surgery tomorrow

Good to hear back from you. And that you're doing well and focusing on walking and breathing. Wishing you a quick and uneventful rest of recovery.

    BNP: An insightful biomarker

BNP is a test which requires a simple blood draw yet can shed valuable insights about the valve deterioration (based on inference from the resultant pressure inside the heart). This test is generally done to rule out heart failure and is NOT a standard practice for valve patients, but some...

    Surgery tomorrow

All the very best tomorrow. You will be on the other side before you know it and have a wealth of experience yourself to share with current and future valvers. Looking forward to hearing from you in a few days.

    Mitral Valve Repair

Looks like you're doing much better since surgery, your EF is much better and hypertrophy is resolved. So what's the issue? You feeling a bit unwell (shortness of breath, lethargic/lack of energy etc) around the same time every evening may have to do with the timing when certain drug(s) (e.g...

12 week update: Work in process

No, that's not the case. BP isn't a problem here. ARBs are known to also have some heart function/EF rebuilding properties, like Entresto and Jardiance, albeit latter ones are much-much stronger (and new drugs available/approved for this intended use in the last couple of years). Listen around...

12 week update: Work in process

My Hemoglobin/RBC/Hematocrit at the time of discharge were depressed, and actual numbers (and pertaining discussion) can be seen here: https://www.valvereplacement.org/threads/2-week-post-op-hemoglobin-hematocrit-rbc-remain-depressed.889702/post-935371 A few weeks later, they were all in normal...

12 week update: Work in process

UPDATE: To wrap-up the physical activity progress post-surgery, I've been now running 6 miles during my 1-hour sessions since my 3-month anniversary which was just over a week ago (Oct 23rd). With that, I've met my own expectations to this regard, and would hopefully settle down at this level...

12 week update: Work in process

Looks like you're making progress, that's good. And 1.8 INR is not too shabby at all. You can bring it up at home. Anemia will resolve within the coming few weeks. Hopefully they've an answer for the effusion too as they prepare to send him home. All the best, you're almost there.

1 Year after AVR and Aneurysm Repair (Bentall)

Passing along great vibes :) You were at the right place at the right time when Roger and his wife needed it the most, heading into the OR. I'm sure they appreciated it a lot. Our prayers for Roger's very successful surgery and smooth recovery thereafter. Hope your wife's outpatient procedure...

    Hubby back in a-fib. *sigh*

I encountered some of these things right after my surgery as I outlined in my initial response on this thread: https://www.valvereplacement.org/threads/12-week-update-work-in-process.889789/ - Your husband needs to work with them and follow their advice. They are your best friend and have best...

12 week update: Work in process

The biggest task (i.e. the surgery itself) is behind him. All these miscellaneous issues aren't uncommon and will be resolved in the next few days.

2 week post-op: Hemoglobin, hematocrit, RBC remain depressed

As others noted on this thread and I also experienced, Hemoglobin/hematocrit/RBC comes back up eventually. It's one of those things that can be depressed for a while. There could be blood loss during surgery among various other factors. Mine gradually got better, and was in normal range after...

12 week update: Work in process

It happens but he will be fine. Depending on the amount of fluid, he may be taken into the catheterization lab to drain it (rather than relying on Lasix). He will feel much better afterwards. They have many ways to resolve all this. Hang in there, these things happen. He’s going to be just...

    High NTpBNP levels after surgery

Please relax, if there's anything concerning, his doctor will let him/you know. Now, what are the units here - is it 745 ng/L or 745 pg/mL? There are two tests (or units of measurement) that measure the same thing (i.e. the pressure inside the heart) - normal range is respectively <300 ng/L and...

12 week update: Work in process

Please keep running since that's the best test for your valve's deterioration (or lack thereof). You would know your symptoms more proactively when it happens, based on your running performance. I personally think the best time for surgery is obviously not too late, but also not too soon. A...
