OK. Now...something to think about. Try and keep surgery on YOUR terms rather than your hearts terms. In other words, do it when you're healthy and not wait until it's an emergency. Timing is everything. But if your dr recommends the surgery and gives you valid reasons, consider doing it now...

    2weeks & 1 day

Great progress! I'm 5 weeks post surgery and bored bored bored. I'm still crashing during the day and take LONG naps which is messing with my sleep pattern at night. I'm working 4 hrs part-time from home which although it's sitting at my desk, still wears me out. Tomorrow I have my f/u with the...

    Cardio + Surgeon

I saw my cardiologist one week after my discharge. She was the one that completed the paper for my return to part-time work (remote, of course) and will complete the final return to work paperwork in 2 weeks. I see the surgeon on Thurs for a check up on the incision. In fact, I'm seeing the...

    What's ahead?

Alright....I'm a woosie. I had a sneezing fit last night (about 8 all in a row) and took a Percecet. Had another 7 sneeze fit this morning and took 2 Ultrams (a light weight Rx) I don't know about anyone else, but those big sneezes seem to last all day. But I haven't taken that many narcotic Rxs...

    One more day

Funny you should mention sneezing and not coughing. You'll have to cough to get your lungs cleared after surgery. Make sure you know what your pain meds are and the schedule. The nurses will tell you. Don't....repeat DON"T try and be a martyr and deal with the pain. It's harder to regain a...

Full recovery, but I cry a lot now (movies, music...)

Cardiac depression is a known issue following surgery. Bring this up to your cardiologist, primary care doctor and/or cardiac rehab therapists. They can help you.

    Dizziness

I'm 4 weeks out of AVR and am also taking Metoporal. I still have bouts of dizziness, mainly when I get out of a chair. I'm seeing the surgeon this Tues for my followup and this is definitely one of the things I'm going to ask him about. I'll report back.

    Is surgery really necessary?

  10. dcc617

    Eye issues.

A few times my eyes went completely out of focus. If I closed my right eye, the vision in my left was fine and vice versa. My eyes just weren't working together. My cardiologist wasn't concerned since A) my eyes were good on their own and B) it didn't last long. I see the surgeon next week for...

Hello from the other side of the mountain

Great news! Keep up the good work. Keep us in the loop. Dave

Surgery date has been set to 03/27/2012

I had asked about banking blood and was told it wasn't necessary. They use the cell saver and reuse my own blood. Also there were 4 units ready to go if needed. But...didn't need it. The other issue is if your surgery date is moved for some reason. (mine was moved twice)

    Radical Sternectomy

Alright Greg - I did as you told me. I waited till after my surgery to read about you. All I can say is YEOW! Good to have you around. Dave

    Called the surgeon today....

Greg Believe me (and all of us) the waiting is far worse than the actual procedure. I totally agree with Bill - it will be over before you know it. Best of luck. Dave

Getting ready for the big day

Hey Greg. Welcome. You'll find a big supportive group of friends here. My valve was also bicuspid. I think that's a common thread among us Valve Replacees. (is that a word) You've heard it before and you'll hear it again - waiting is the worst part. Surgery for me was actually pretty easy...

How long does it take to heal

Thanks for the info Larry. It's something to watch for. Interesting about the weight restrictions. I was told that the rules are being relaxed and the 5lb restriction has been raised to 30 lbs. I asked my cardiologist about this and she said that basically everyone has an opinion. She still...

    Hello all.

Sorry to hear about your experience in ICU. I remember having a nurse planted in the doorway the entire time. When I moved or opened my eyes, she was right there asking if I needed anything. My partner is a nurse and tells me that the 'normal' procedure for ICU patients is 1 on 1 care. It...

    Out of the hospital.

The nurse practioner told me to eat anything I wanted. I think you'll find your appetite will limit you.

    Pillow Talk

Whew. Thought I was being a bit of a baby. Mom2 - the first sneeze took my breath away and I needed one of the heavy pain pills. I felt it all day. (no kidding) The next days sneeze was also bad. The one today hurt but it seemed to pass quickly. Unfortunately, all three sneezes came on all of...
