    The old members

Indeed, this place is such an asset, judging by the number of people using it at any given moment (131 currently--6 members), so there are still lots of people benefitting from your wisdom. It's great to be reminded of some of your stories and how long you've been contributing.

    10 years today

It's hard to believe, but 10 years ago today I walked out of the hospital with some new pieces and some repaired bits. Certainly, there were plenty of challenges in the beginning, but after some slow healing for a couple years, all's been smooth sailing since with good annual check-ups and few...

Military flying status and ascending aortic aneurysm

Thank you for offering the update, and as always, my compliments to all the earlier posters for offering so much good information. What a community! You are correct that 'LA Major' is about the left atrium measurement, but it's only one part of the measures that come on an echo, and the whole...

Staying in shape during recovery from open-heart surgery.

Just want to support all the wisdom already shared above. There's so much happening on so many levels that it really is wise to focus on recovery. The activity will return, but right now is time to take things slowly and perhaps focus on other challenges.

A week after surgery, my story

Thanks for the update after sharing so much. I've no doubt loads of people are finding inspiration in your journey. Sorry things aren't going the smoothest but applause on your continued self-advocacy.

Indeed, huge congratulations. What a powerful example.

    2 years today

Congratulations on the anniversary and the continued progress. Indeed, the journey continues in fits and starts for all of us, though in different ways, obviously. I'll echo Dick's comment that support and info are your allies so don't be shy about learning/reaching out.

17 Year Old - Will this change my life?

Hi GlassOcean, just wanted to say welcome and second all the thoughtful comments about having a perfectly active life post-surgery.

    Running the long races...

As others noted, just by taking things easy, you'll be fine. I didn't do any real distance running until after surgery, and it worked fine to simply train thoughtfully without pushing things to a crazy degree. My cardiologist was fine with it, as I monitored my heart rate throughout. All the...

    Urgent Question before Travelling

Have a lovely trip. Your medical team is in favor; you'll have family with you; and you've been building up your fitness working around the house. Seems like you're all set to fly.

Picking Doctors for Aortic Valve Replacement

On the cardiology side, I was a patient of Dr Hill's for several years, and he was excellent. He was great about listening and discussing my condition in light of my lifestyle expectations (around exercise, basically). He was really knowledgeable about best practices in cardiology and might be a...

    No recovery at 8 months

Good for you, Dell. Indeed, care providers are often the worst about caring for themselves! All the best finding some answers, as epstns suggests. You're very a thoughtful GP, it sounds, and I'm sure your patients also look forward to you being back at full speed.

    First swim meet

Well done. Keep up the excellent work.

    Push ups?

I'll echo prior comments about bringing the issue up with a doc, but for what it's worth, I'm almost a decade out, and the wires still get moody sometimes after push-ups. It's never serious or a limiting issue but not pleasant, either. It's excellent you're back to such activity, though. Keep...

    First swim meet

Indeed, love that advice Epstns about staying ahead of the game. You all are great role models for the rest of us.

    Sports after aortic valve replacment

As others described, the increase in activity will come with time as you feel better over the next few months. You'll start feeling stronger and more confident over this first year until one day you realize you're just performing and not thinking about the heart at all. In the interim, be...

Running in cold weather after AVR

I can't say I've experienced anything similar in winter, either. While as I get older, I'm a lot more particular about dressing correctly, I haven't experienced anything cardiac-related. As pellicle suggests, maybe try a bit more description. As always, though, if you're that concerned, it...

Time between meeting surgeon and surgery

All the best on Thursday. It's that much sooner you can make an excellent recovery.
