Bio vs Mechanical for a 31 yr old

mrfox Just wanted to wish you the best. The responses cover all the nuances of this decision, but as others have said, the great thing is that we have choices at this point, and they work! You and your care team can evaluate the trade-offs as it suits you, but as neil and dick0236 point out...

Jets rookie makes NFL debut with life-saving cardiologist on hand

Ah, yes, excellent point, Agian! I was thinking more about other sports like running or swimming or such. I should have been more clear--though my cardiologist did suggest taking up American football post-surgery (his way of stressing I could live life and be adventurous, I figure).

Jets rookie makes NFL debut with life-saving cardiologist on hand

Interesting: "In a pre-op conference, Coleman's cardiologist told him there was a 95 percent chance he'd be able to fix it, allowing Coleman to return to football. If that didn't work, he'd have to insert a mechanical valve, and that would mean the end of all sports." This notion that a...

Thanks to you both. No, pellicIe, I don't seem to get notifications for anything and can't quite sort how that works on here. Superman, I look forward to being a teenager again, for certain--this time with a bit of wisdom under my belt, however!

Of course, pellicle, Spartans and Gators are mascots of two of the places I went to uni. It was just a convenient way to avoid bumping into already claimed user names so that bird above has it right :)

    Heart Rate during cardio workouts

I pay some attention to keeping heart rate below its absolute peak, but I've definitely gone hard in some races like Sumo Runner. My cardiologist isn't concerned about it, and I make sure to race in line with my training so apart from wearing a monitor, I don't stress it much. Listen to your...

Posture after surgery - longterm changes?

Yes, for sure, I've noticed this. The stiffer sternum affects my shoulders as well, but like you two, I just continue to work at things that stretch the area and develop mobility across the chest. Fortunately, it all seems to be helping, especially opening the ribcage as you're doing. We have...

Thank you all. I sincerely appreciate the good wishes. It's not a journey that's easy to explain to others so I try to still drop in here a couple times a month to chime in for the next folks. You're the best. Mike1959, I had the Ross Procedure (aortic valve replaced with my own pulmonary, and...

    Running races?

My doctor encourages running. I did a marathon a couple years post-surgery and now that's his first question at every annual check-up: 'Any marathons?' He's a runner himself so it's fun to discuss. As others have mentioned, check with your medical team, of course, but running is certainly within...
