    NEWBIE: Needs advice

I eat like the first picture. Did a 20 mile bike ride today though. I’m all about balance.

    I’m relaxed. Me too.

Pyrolytic Carbon. Not carbon fiber. ATS, St Jude, and On-X are all made of the same stuff. Mechanical or tissue is a much bigger decision factor than which mechanical valve. They’re all pretty much the same. The only thing I wouldn’t do is follow the 1.5-2.0 target INR that On-X lobbied...

INR difference between lab and my Coagucheck

I had a recent 3.5 (meter) to 2.7 (lab) result. But they were a day apart and my meter test was in the afternoon and the lab in the morning. Not very controlled so I didn’t put a lot of stock into it and wouldn’t change my dose for either one.

Greetings, and welcome Lisa, 23 years is a long time. Glad you found us! I found this place about 13 years ago when facing a second surgery due to an aneurysm. Didn’t exist when I had my St Jude valve installed almost 33 years ago. It’s a fantastic place to share experiences and learning...

    NEWBIE: Needs advice

I was told mine has a lifetime guarantee. Your anecdotal example is not a case of a mechanical valve wearing out, but rather a second surgery being required for a different reason. My second surgery was required due to an aneurysm, not due to the valve wearing out. Can you find or cite...

    NEWBIE: Needs advice

For me, I’ve been ticking and taking warfarin for close to 33 years now. Since 1990. I’m 50. The noise doesn’t bother me, but I can’t play tooth fairy for my kids. I can never sneak the money under the pillow quietly. My wife finds the sound soothing. Although if I have a rhythm issue...

    NEWBIE: Needs advice

Thank you for saying this. Just so you know where the disclosures and caveats come from, people have come in to these forums accusing certain posters of having a specific “agenda” when it comes to sharing experiences. Valve choice is a tough decision and an emotional one. Not a lot of room...

Mechanical valves have a greater vulnerability to infection? I haven’t heard that one. Always open to new info - just don’t recall that being mentioned before.

    tissue vs. mechanical

Greetings Brodie, and welcome. Ultimately, as everyone says, it’s your decision. We can only share our experiences and if they have an impact on your decision, either way, I hope you find them helpful. I had my valve replaced when I was 17 with a St Jude Mechanical. I’ve been on warfarin...

Bicuspid Aortic Valve and possible future aortic dilatation

Thing is, it can be 10x higher than the general population and still be rather small odds statistically. I was 17 when I had my valve replaced and 36 when I had my aneurysm repaired. I’m 50 now. But I don’t feel a day over 49. Just for reference.

I don’t know about that. You may not be the worst driver, but you just might have the worst luck! 😁

    One year with mechanical valve

Interestingly, I did my home test yesterday afternoon and it came back at 3.5. I was due for some other lab work and went in this morning. I always have a standing order at the lab for an INR whenever I want, so I figured I’d order one up. Came back at 2.7. Old fashioned needle stick kind...

    Everyone officially screened now.

Yeah, I thought we all agreed eugenics was a bad thing years ago. Seems to be coming back en vogue.

    Everyone officially screened now.

Finally had our youngest two kids screened and they are clear of any valvular disease. So really just our oldest is followed annually and listed as moderate. Our third shows evidence of the gene but is functionally normal (minor partial fusion of two leaflets, but still has a tricuspid valve)...

I’m the kid that shows up on test day and does well and makes the kids who studied and prepared mad. 😂
