    question for the women

I have an IUD as well, I have had it for two and a half years now. I had a bit of spotting in the beginning but only very occasional spotting since. I have found it to be a really good option for me. The periods I had while on coumadin before I got the IUD were horrible, really heavy bleeding to...

    this may sound silly

My cardiologist sends me off every year with a reminder to look after my teeth and look after my feet :) Basically to keep my blood on the inside and my skin intact where possible. I get vaccinated for 'flu every year and have a pneumonia shot every three years.

    "survivors" and "battle scars"

This thread has brought me to tears. MNmom, you are close to my age, I also had the tissue valve and then the mech valve and ended up with a pacemaker. I am also lucky to have my two healthy little boys. At the moment I am going through a rough patch. Depression/anxiety runs in my family and I...

Can I still Sneak Up On Folks?

I went on holiday with a friend last year and one night we were sitting looking at photos on her laptop. The room was very quiet and she said 'I can hear your watch ticking'. I replied, 'mate, that's not my watch, that's my valve'. :) Then today I put my ear to an egg that is due to hatch to...

    Pnemonia shots?

I got the pneumonia vaccine and get a 'flu shot every year since my mech valve was put in. GP recommended it. No big deal, I go in every month for an INR anyway.

Scary - pacemaker suddenly stopped working!

Aaron, I would like to believe that these things never happen, or that they will never happen again. I have had a lot of trouble coming to terms with my pacemaker and this happening to K made a lot of my fears come back. I went looking for studies on pacemaker reliability, and found a study...

    need pacemaker advice for read

I ended up with a pacemaker after my second AVR, it was a shock as I was not prepared for it mentally, and we have had a few minor issues with the programming, but apart from that no problems. I got a Medtronic Enpulse nearly 3 years ago now.

Scary - pacemaker suddenly stopped working!

I know it is not really a valve issue, but I suspect there are others on here with pacemakers. A lady I know who has a rare heart condition and had been fitted with a pacemaker started having symptoms and it was found at her pacemaker check that the battery was completely dead. Her last check...

    My random newby question thread

I didn't have one before either valve replacement. I had a TEE before my first and a CT before my second. The CT was to check the scarring from the previous surgery, if I remember correctly. But I was 22yo for my first surgery and 27yo for my second.

    Splitting 2mg Coumadin?

I do take half the split tablet on one day and my next 3mg dose I take the other half, so I get an even dosage over the course of a few days. As far as I know where I live we can get 1,2,5 or 10mg Coumadin, so we have to work within that limitation.

    Splitting 2mg Coumadin?

My INR was 2.6 at my test last Friday, so steady (was 2.5 at the previous test). But my GP wants me to keep on using the 1mg tablets as he said that splitting was 'not as accurate'. I smiled and nodded, he put the script for the 1mg on the same page as the script for 2mg, so next time I stock...

    3rd valve replacement!!!!

Hi there. I am also 30, I have had two OHSs and I have two boys who were born while I had my tissue replacement valve. I now have a mechanical aortic valve. You were lucky to get your three before your tissue valve wore out, I would have had another if I had been able, but as it was my younger...

    Splitting 2mg Coumadin?

Thanks Ross, that is what I was hoping :) I think I will talk to my GP about just working off the 2mgs if this works alright and see if I can get a larger supply so I don't have to go the the dispensary every three weeks.

    Splitting 2mg Coumadin?

I am on a dose that alternates between 3 and 4mg, so usually I take a 1mg and a 2mg on the 3 days and two 2mg on the 4 days. But when I ran out of 1mg tablets last week I discovered that my prescription was out of date so i couldn't get any more. I am two weeks from my next INR and GP visit, so...

    Pregnancy and MVR

That story brought a tear to my eye. What a lovely outcome for your friend!! I had my two children while I had my pig valve. It lasted five years and was replaced when my younger son was three months old. It has taken me a long time to come to terms with the fact that I will not have another...

Choosing valve with active lifestyle and being 21

I had a stentless porcine aortic valve put in to replace my own valve when I was 22yo. This decision was made to allow me to have trouble-free pregnancies. I expected that I would have 12-15 years with my tissue valve. I had my two kids at 3 and 5 years post-op, and when my youngest was 8wo I...

    Another Little Survey--BAV Body Type

Um, 5'5", medium build. Pretty much spot on 'average' height and recommended weight for a female. I have big feet, but they run in my family (mum and sister wear size 10, nana has same size feet as me but is 5'2"). Small hands. Only other connective tissue symptom is that I got bad stretch marks...

    Mentally adjusting to OHS

Aussiegirl, I am the same, not so bad these days but there was a time when if I even cut my finger it was my pacemaker's fault! And the slightest bit of lightheadedness made me fear that I would collapse and die. It took over my whole life and I was eventually treated for post traumatic stress...

    Confused??

The sonographer had a good look at my younger son's aortic valve during the 18week anatomical scan when I was pregnant. Much to my relief it looked fine. I had fused leaflets rather than two leaflets instead of three. Possibly if they had found it earlier, before the valve started to...
