Labs don't match. Meters don't match. Is 'hoping' that you're in range enough?

****: Thank you!!! That's exactly what I was told nearly 9 years ago when I got my first INR monitor. I had to test my ProTime 3 against the PCP's Coaguchek, and they were 0.3 or 0.4 apart. I was told that since I was going to home-test, to rely on my meter. (My PCP's office uses a CoaguChek...

    Colonography instead of colonoscopy

Is a colonography what's called a virtual colonoscopy? That's been discussed here before. I've had one colonoscopy while on warfarin -- got my INR down to 2.5, I think (would have to check my INR diaries to be sure). A few people have even had polyps removed while on warfarin. Lovenox, used for...

Not sure what INR numbers to trust.

Who put you on an antibiotic and which antibiotic is it? If the ER doctor RXed the antibiotic, I can understand the increase in INR. Many antibiotics kill the good flora normally found in the GI tract. About 50% of your vitamin K is produced in your own body, in the GI tract. Therefore...

    Induction cooktops and On-X valve

Are you planning to lie down on the cooktop? :eek2: If not, I would not think there would be any problem with any type of mechanical heart valve. If mechanical valves are MRI-compatible, I would assume you would be safe around a cooktop, microwave or whatever.

How much Vitamin K do you consume?

I learned early on not to micromanage or over-analyze my intake. I eat a fair amount, but I don't track it.

Mini-sternotomy AVR - How long before I can travel abroad?

Jkm7: My thoughts exactly. I had almost responded similarly to this. Most people are unable to walk SEVERAL miles 7 days post-op and/or carry 25+ pounds 1 month post-op. It's also difficult to have a consistently stable INR just 2 months out. I was so pleased to get 2 tests back-to-back that...

    Blueberries versus greens...

Coffeelover: I used to obsess over vitamin K content in foods -- even had servers peel salad cucumbers to eliminate that source of vitamin K, would avoid sushi that had a lot of nori, limited the number of pickles I ate. Then I got a life and realized that my dosage will be adjusted to my INR...

Meters 'don't work' for everybody ??? -- Values are always higher than lab?

Luana: Yup, I thought of you and had to hunt for the thread about thalassemia.

Mini-sternotomy AVR - How long before I can travel abroad?

I would suggest 3 months. By then, you'll hopefully be back to your normal energy level and be able to tolerate any jet lag + disruptions in your normal routine without being wiped out. A friend had an MVR several years ago. About 4-5 weeks post op, I think, she **had** (in her terminology) to...

    Cold medicine

Benylin is much like the Robitussin formulas marketed here in the U.S. The main ingredient in Benylin, dextromethorphan, is a cough suppressant, according to several websites I saw. The Robitussin DM formula also includes an expectorant, guaifenesin, which means that when you do cough. it's more...

    hemolytic anemia/long story

I have never heard of a mechanical valve whose leaflets were leaking "back." Paravalvular regurge is not unusual (I have it), but leaking leaflets??? Something is missing here.

    Taro warfarin question

I've used Coumadin and Barr, Taro & Zydus. Never had a problem, other than the occasional blip that could be resulting from erratic schedule when traveling (time changes, forgotten dosage & having to compensate for it, etc.). Because I split the tabs, I like some pill shapes better than others...

Meters 'don't work' for everybody ??? -- Values are always higher than lab?

Does the doctor who manages your anticoagulation therapy use POC monitors or blood draws? That is the big question to answer. Because my first INR tests post-op were on POC monitors, I have luckily escaped the debate/argument over which is "correct," a POC monitor or the old-fashioned lab blood...

That 1st anniversary seems to be very tearful... knowing you are alive 1 year later, and might not be otherwise.

Meters 'don't work' for everybody ??? -- Values are always higher than lab?

It's not a matter of "some meters just don't work," it's probably dependent on a medical condition. http://www.valvereplacement.org/forums/showthread.php?13311-INR-Lab-vs-Office-Machine-amp-Thalassemia However, I would assume that doctors would have already found this by now, if this applied...

    Roche Diagnostics Out of Network

Perhaps it's more related to terms of your particular health insurance policy. Some provide 100% coverage of DME, some cover a set percentage of the cost -- which may not be a straight percentage, but only a percentage of "usual and customary" or some other similar wording. My first monitor was...

    Roche Diagnostics Out of Network

Perhaps it was the red-tape of your insurance carrier coupled with having to wade through the agility course of diagnostics, doctors' schedules, etc., that caused a wait from August to March for you. I had an echo on 4/15/03, saw cardio on 4/29, who said I needed surgery ASAP & wanted me to go...

If I ever have to stop home-testing, I will find a clinic that uses professionals with CACP credentials. Hope that day is a long time off......

6 months after operation still weak and catching cold/coughing

What tests have been run? I saw on your profile that you are retired or semi-retired. Which means you have the opportunity to have a more relaxing schedule than someone who is trying to recover from OHS while chasing down toddlers. So it's puzzling why you feel so weak and draggy. Something is...
