What type of jobs you guys got?

Job? No job anymore, retired now. But spent 40 years as a software engineer. Prior to that I was a machinist and technician. There is no restrictions on career choice, but unthinking employers might get squeamish about hiring someone with a medical history. It's best not to mention it at all on...

    Truned 65 today

To mark the day I did 65 pushups and ran 6.5 miles, just because I can. 21 years after AVR and still going strong.

In my estimation, I think an aneurysm is more dangerous than anything I ever had.

I had that same conversation. The Dr said if I lead a sedentary life it would last another 4-5 years before needing replacement or if I wanted to keep doing what I was doing it would have to be soon. I opted for as soon as possible so I could return to my running.

Enquiries on Doing gym and competitive sports

The first time I was told to limit competitive sports was at age 15, 50 years ago. I didn't always listen to that advice. I was a serious runner for a couple decades but the valve did eventually deteriorate and need replacement. Could that have been because I took on too much stress in training...

One word of caution. The valve won't deteriorate slowly and evenly. It's not a gradual slope. It will worsen significantly in sudden steps without much warning. I can point to the exact place at 9 Km in a 15 Km race where it worsened sufficiently to require replacement. There was no indication...

    My 2013 Challenge

Nah, I junked that old bike 15 or 20 years ago.

    My 2013 Challenge

That's a lot of water time. I swam 23,600 yds last summer and ran 1038 miles for the year, but no cycling. I only swam 3 days a week in July & Aug outdoors. Haven't done any indoor swimming in decades and no longer even own a bike. I once commuted to work by bike but that was mid-80s. Maybe I'll...

    My 2013 Challenge

I got off to a good start thanks to the half marathon, 26 miles total last week. That's way more than average. Typical for me in Jan. is 12-14 miles per week. The weather's not going to be so bad the next few days, so possibly I could to stay on track.

    A good new year already

Isn't it great when you can do "normal" stuff. One of the first things I did a month after AVR was take a short hike with my boys. It wasn't a big hill, a rather easy trail, but it was up a mountainside and when we got to the top I could see forever.

Signed up for a half marathon

Not the first time I have finished DFL, nor the first time a finish line was dismantled on me at a certain break-off. I was 2nd from last in the December 15K, only out-slowed by one 20-something woman novice. In the half, at about 3 miles I caught up to the same girl, so we ran together and...

Signed up for a half marathon

The Hangover Half Marathon is done. It turns out 13.1 miles is double the 9.3 mile distance, kind of like a Tardis effect. It took me more than 3 hours as predicted, don't know exactly since they dismantled the finish line and removed the clock before I got back. The guy ahead of me said it was...

Signed up for a half marathon

Shoot! At 40F I'd be running in shorts. I don't think the temps Jan 1st will even reach 30F, plus a little snow for good measure.

Signed up for a half marathon

First, I do not know my max heart rate, never have, so I run by how the body feels. I monitor the legs, lungs and general feeling of fatigue. You're supposed to be more stressed in shorter distances. Since it is shorter, you push harder to get the maximum out of your body in the allotted time...

Signed up for a half marathon

An old timer weight lifting gave me advice a long, long time ago that has stuck with me for decades. "Start low, go slow." The simplest advice can sometimes have the deepest meaning. Apply that to pretty much everything you do and you can never go wrong. If you're a type A personality...

Signed up for a half marathon

The course is relatively flat and rather convoluted. It uses multiple loops of the perimeter roads of the state office campus in Albany, NY. It is deep winter, often well below zero here on Jan 1st, and most other routes could be unsafe or impassible. This is always plowed and traffic free on...

Signed up for a half marathon

I run a lot of races, 25 this year alone, but they're mostly short and only once or twice a year will I go for 10 or 15K. But this year I've had an especially good running year and I was able to get through a 14 mile training run last Saturday. That's the longest run I've done in I don't know...

To Do Cardic Rehab or Not?

I never did. I was 43 at the time. Rehab programs 21 years ago were not for people who were already fit. Maybe they're better now. Back then they were pretty lame if you had been in good shape prior to AVR. Walk slowly on a treadmill, lift a 10 lb dumbbell, etc. So I went out and did my own...

    Running with a pacemaker

Oh yeah. I've met many going back as far as 20 years ago. There were several on our Cardiac Athletes team at the Baltimore running festival in October. Some ran the half marathon, some the relay or 5K. I don't know if any of the full marathoners had PMs but it wouldn't be unheard of.

Need advice on cardiac rehab in Florida

No replies in a week. I guess no one is familiar with your area. I'd say to check any physical therapy office or hospital. My son is a Dr of PT in Mass. and sees some heart patients.
