    dentist

I had endocarditis 6 years ago. It hasn’t changed my 2x a year dental routine. I take 2,000mg amoxicillin. I am, however, nervous about going to the dentist at this time. I rescheduled once already and have an appointment in mid July. They seem a bit pushy for business, which I understand...

    Murmur after surgery

It's going to be echos (TTE) that are going to be an indicator of how your valve is doing. The murmurs heard from a stethescope is somewhat subjective. I had mitral valve repair 10 years ago at the age of 47 by a world reknown surgeon myself. I still have mild to mod regurg even after a bout...

    Endocarditis

Well the key is getting a good culture without having antibiotics in the system. So you caught it in time. I went about 6-7 weeks before getting a positive blood culture. Kind of hard when you're trying to time it between antibiotics which was my problem. They did a TEE to determine the...

    Endocarditis

Sorry I'm a little late with this mecretired. I had my endocarditis event 5 years ago. For a period of 6 weeks, run a fever, take oral antibiotics, finish antibiotics fever returns, get blood culture but a took antibiotic and skewed results, after second or most likely 3rd blood culture weeks...

A tale of Endocarditas and valve replacement.

I had my endocarditis event 5 years ago. For a period of 6 weeks, run a fever, take oral antibiotics, finish antibiotics fever returns, get blood culture but a took antibiotic and skewed results, after second blood culture weeks later, infection confirmed 12 mm vegetation. Admitted to hospital...

10 year Anniversary MV repair & 5 year Anniversary Bacterial Endocarditis

Seems like yesterday. At this point in time, I have stable mild/moderate regurgitation and some MV leaf thickening partly due to the endocarditis it is thought. Totally unrelated, I have a low grade prostate cancer diagnosis and am currently following an Active Surveillance protocol for the...

    MItral Valve Repair

I'm hitting the 10 year mark in June. It's outlived the dishwasher we purchased several months later.

    Endocarditis

I had IE back in 2014 but the valve was not damaged. Unfortunately, a piece of vegetation shot to my right leg and I needed an emergency arterial thombectomy and 3 compartment fasciotomy. I'm good, but yes you need to be cognizant of fevers. I'd get chummy with a good ID doctor. Mine is still on...

    Anxious About Mitral Valve Replacement.

I had a mitral valve repair 9 years ago. First surgery ever. It was done robotically. The leaking is why you need the surgery. Calcification could be why a replace instead of just a repair. You will do great. It really wasn’t as bad as it sounds.

    Follow up visits with cardiologist

For the first 5 years after surgery, minimum once a year and sometimes twice a year, Since endocarditis in 2014, twice a year, one for echo and the other to update and chat. I can't imagine not going.

    3 Month Follow-Up / Pleural Effusion

My pleural effusion came about around 8 weeks after surgery. I was told during the pre surgery period that pleural effusion occurs in approximately 20% of all heart surgeries. Yes it can start months later. Mine was minimal and I was given a steriod pack. It did go away.

    Prosthetic Valve Endocarditis?

I'd like to add to this if I may. After endocarditis, I was told to take the 2000 mg amoxicillin for all dental. Also, I take it for all procedures and surgeries per cardio and Infectious disease doctors. In fact, all my procedures need a sign off from cardio and ID. So, it's really a pain...

    Prosthetic Valve Endocarditis?

Hello Kyle, i have gotten infective endocarditis. What your doctors are doing is the proper course of action. My symptoms mirror yours and lasted several months before I got strep strain F. My vegetation measured at 12mm =1.2cm. A recheck by regular echo after 3 weeks of antibiotics reduced...

Dentist clearance letter for heart surgery?

I have to agree that a clearance letter would not be that big a deal. As one who has experienced endocarditis resulting in a subsequent "freak" arterial thrombectomy and fasciotomy, I can't have any procedure whether a hernia repair or prostate biopsy without a sign off from cardiology...

    Time for a new Cardiologist

Hello Terry, I have nothing but good things to say about St. Joseph's as a heart hospital and a overall surgical hospital. I've certainly had my share of complicated stuff. Having joined in an alliance with Emory only makes it better. Good luck.
