I had a mitral valve repair 9 years ago. First surgery ever. It was done robotically. The leaking is why you need the surgery. Calcification could be why a replace instead of just a repair. You will do great. It really wasn’t as bad as it sounds.

For the first 5 years after surgery, minimum once a year and sometimes twice a year, Since endocarditis in 2014, twice a year, one for echo and the other to update and chat. I can't imagine not going.

My pleural effusion came about around 8 weeks after surgery. I was told during the pre surgery period that pleural effusion occurs in approximately 20% of all heart surgeries. Yes it can start months later. Mine was minimal and I was given a steriod pack. It did go away.

Hello Terry, I have nothing but good things to say about St. Joseph's as a heart hospital and a overall surgical hospital. I've certainly had my share of complicated stuff. Having joined in an alliance with Emory only makes it better. Good luck.
