    Fibrillin and its significance

I believe that there is a mutation in the gene, either inherited or spontaneous, that causes a deficiency in fibrillin-1. The interesting thing is that a large pecentage of BAV owners do not have any trouble with their aortas. I'm wondering if in their cases they had just enough fibrillin-1 to...

    Freaking out...

I've had my share of these, Niki, and it's always turned out to be a cyst or something else non-threatening. The vast majority of these things turn out to be benign. I know what it's like to have to wait for a Monday appointment. I had to wait over the weekend for biopsy results once after the...

    AVR and dementia

Rachele's answer makes excellent sense. I know my dad had multiple mini-strokes in his later years. Perhaps some of these occurred in connection with the hip surgery and caused what seemed like a fairly sudden dementia following. I should have said before that it was an elective surgery, and...

    AVR and dementia

My dad's dementia began after hip-replacement surgery done in his seventies. We always attributed it to the anethesia, the pain-killers following the operation and the general trauma to the body. The geriatric specialist told us that surgery does affect older people in this way sometimes. He...

My 5 year old's dilated aorta

Mike, We discovered my older son's BAV when his little brother sprained his ankle, and while big bro happened to be in the office the dr took a casual listen with the stethoscope. Subsequently, we found out that the sprained ankle son also has a dliated aorta, without the BAV. I just wanted to...

    When do you know?

My understanding is that you can have moderate or even mod/severe aortic insufficiency for years, even many years, without it progressing to the need for surgery. It's a very good sign that your heart chamber dimensions are normal. My son is also at mod/severe AO insufficiency, but he also has...

    Heart problems?

Della Anne-- Hi. I just wanted to tell you that I wore a heart monitor to work, and nobody even noticed. Mine was called a Holter, and I had to push a little button whenever I felt an extra beat. I was pushing away all morning and still nobody noticed! It turned out that I get around 2,000...

    insurance

In the state of Iowa it is mandated by law that no one be denied health care coverage. That was a very good thing for us when my husband quit his job and we were denied COBRA! My son was able to get on HIP Iowa with full coverage and reasonable payments even with lapsed coverage. There is a...

Consult with Cleveland Clinic January 8

One thing I've noticed from watching and asking questions at quite a few echos now is that a BAV (at least my son's BAV) really does look as though it has three cusps...until you see it move from the right angle. The key thing is to look for three cusps when they are open to their fullest extent.

    Seeking Advice/Words of Wisdom

Thanks everybody for all the advice. It was just what I was looking for--the support of others who understand. Nancy, that is great advice about getting the doctor to do the talking. The trouble is that he does not actually see the doctor until he has the MRA, it has only been the echo tech...

    Seeking Advice/Words of Wisdom

Thanks so much for your quick and warm responses. As you have noted, fear seems to be the problem. Even for way less important medical issues there is always a good deal of denial. But this time it's, "There's nothing wrong with my heart." The stakes are so much higher. I have to feel out...

    Pump Head

Both of my parents had surgery in their elder years and both experienced a permanant decrease in their cognitive abilities post-op--but neither surgery involved a heart/lung machine. We attributed their mental effects to the anesthesia, and indeed were told that it is not uncommon for elderly...

    percantaneous valves

On the subject of percutaneous valves, has anyone heard or read anything about repair or replacement of the asc aorta done at the same time via robotics? That would be great, but maybe not coming as quickly as just the valve replacement...
