    Extreme exercise

epstns, I am only comfortable running with a heart rate monitor, well over 200km in April. I bought wahoo which is a chest strap and phone app. Works great and syncs with my Suunto 5 smartwatch (which does read HR, but less accurately from wrist).

    Are we high risk?

I have been taking Vitamin D supplements for a while as I was deficient (D-3 5,000 IU). With C-19 I have added (in addition to my multi-vitamin Opti-Men) both zinc and Quercetin, both recommended to boost and balance immune system. Even if just a placebo not expensive and my most recent test...

    New but Lurking for Months!

This coming Friday, May 1st is the 3 year anniversary of my AVR operation (Infective Endocarditis, undiagnosed bicuspid aortic value). IF this valve were to need replacement before the 10 year anniversary I'd be heavily leaning towards a mechanical value replacement if TAVR procedure were not...

    New but Lurking for Months!

This coming Friday is the 3 year anniversary of my AVR surgery. Here in Tokyo, there was little talk of mechanical value options, despite my age at the time (50). St. Jude Medical Trifecta GT (27mm). So far so good, we can still run outside in the parks here, 168km so far in April.

COVID-19 - How are you spending your time?

Here in Tokyo no state of emergency yet, but schools are closed until April. Olympics on hold for 1 year. My teaching job at Temple is "distance" through end of term and with level 4 call last week most American students fly back this week. Weather is good, social distancing and eating/sleeping...

    Corona Virus Feb 2020

The WHO (World Health Organization) has stated that the CFR (Case fatality rate) as near as they can figure is 3.4%. There is a big issue in many places due to lack of testing. S. Korea has the biggest pool of tested cases I am aware of (upwards of 10,000/day) and highest globally as a % of...

    Dental hygiene benefits

The bacteria got into my bloodstream from my mouth. Usually dental surgery, but possible with just flossing/brushing. I was tired and felt a flutter in my chest about 6 weeks before final diagnosis. I was increasingly tired, but it was finally a fever of 103 daily that prompted the tests that...

    Corona Virus Feb 2020

The financial markets have lost $3.5tln in 7 trading days. There is talk of an emergency co-ordinated rate cute before the market open Monday, but it may be like pushing a string. 1st death in USA and big growth in #'s in Italy and S. Korea. Japan #'s steady it seems, but not a lot of testing...

    Corona Virus Feb 2020

One of my friends used to work for Roche and as an employee benefit they all got a lifetime supply of Tamiflu, worth $100,000 in the peak of previous pandemics. He used some for a recent illness to get his immune system ready for USA case expansion (COVID-19) as this is not a case reporting...

It is in fact a 27mm, good catch. Still the Japanese hospital record for "size installed" (i.e. if size "estimated" is 28 they install 1 mm down in size, not up). #JCG

    Dental hygiene benefits

My infective endocarditis was a direct result of gum disease ..... the bacteria was pinpointed as tooth plaque. By the time my bicuspid value was diagnosed it was done. 3 weeks to get the bacteria level down and AVR replacement soon after. It was a shocker of a diagnosis. Teeth cleaning every 8...

I can't get life insurance anymore after my surgery. Suggestions.

Thrivent Financial is the biggest fraternal insurer (2.3mm members). A not for profit, est. by the Lutherans. About 8% of the life insurance in force is with fraternal insurers (40% is group life as an aside). #JCG

    Exercise recommendations after bovine AVR

Hevishot, I life weights several times a week, but you have to be reasonable I would say. Perhaps the most famous case is Arnold Schwarzenegger, he blew out a value returning to big weight too soon requiring a 2nd surgery. He is still with us though!
