Me, too! You'll be driving topless in no time. . . .ha ha. Just remember to use sunscreen. You don't want to get sunburned the first year.

Mechanical valve + Coumadin + Birth Control

Are you home testing your INR yet? WHen you hav access to that, it makes it a lot easier to monitor your INRs so I think the clotting issue is less troubling. You can even test yourself more often to make sure you are staying in range vs the less frequent intervals the clinics follow. I asked...

    BAV, AS and sinus headaches...

I got diagnosed with BAV/AS because I went to the doctor about terrible sinus headaches that wouldn't go away. They started with the cartoid artery (loud noise, maybe clogged--no) and finally found the bad valve. Wasn't the cause of my headaches, but how about that coincidence?

2 weeks post surgery-is coughing normal?

It is likely due to the fluid retention as you mentioned. I had the same issue for the first four weeks-felt like bronchitis. THe coughing was awful (use your pillow). Lasix and cough drops helped a lot.

    Palpitations during exercise

I would call the cardiologist on Monday and let him know if you haven't already. He might need to do a Holter monitor to see if your heart is beating irregularly at other times. I had something similar -- sustained heart racing up and down between 140- 200 bpm. When it did this, I felt...

    How Many Still Exercise?

Okay, I'm going to break the chain of the folks here who have halos floating over them about exercise. :-) I need to be more like you guys! I am not so diligent about exercise at 1 year post op. But then I wasn't very consistent about exercise before surgery either. No excuses. Just...

    1 Year ago today!

Yep-- The hospital called the day before to see if I was going to be able to get there. I said "more importantly, will my surgeon be there 'cause I don't want a substitute?" Apparently in weather like that the hospital staff stays at the hospital and at a nearby hotel. I made it there that...

    Valve selection

Trust your gut feeling (aka heart) Trust your gut feeling (aka heart) Embrace your decision and don't look back. I love my On-X valve, but If I had surgeons at NYU in concensus over the tissue valve I would have gone with that, too. Good luck with your surgery.

    1 Year ago today!

1 Year ago today I was dealing with an Atlanta ice storm and AVR. I'm so glad it is over. Waiting really was the hardest part. Grateful for the many blessings in disguise discovered on this fantastic journey. I'm almost 40 lbs lighter than when I had surgery and am probably healthier than...

    Antibiotics and Warfarin

I know all about bactrim .and clindamycin . .and cipro . .. and macrobid .. your INR will absolutely go up and rather quickly. Protime's suggests are good. Get a baseline today. I would also check in about 3 days to see where you are --you will likely need to reduce your warfarin...

    Why so many problems?

When I had my surgical consult, my surgeon wanted to know what kind of BAV I had. I think he called the twotypes "Functional" or "True." One type was linked to the connective tissue disorder and associated increase of aneurysm. The other type was just a BAV, possibly caused by something like...

Would you share what ablation is ? For afib ?

My cardio said about 30% get afib after AVR. Tomorrow is my 1 year valversary (yay!). The afib has not resolved on it's own. It is well controlled with tons of drugs. However, an ablation or two is in store for me in 2012 to see if I can get rid of some of those drugs.
