It's my time - Questions to Ask a Surgeon

Hello. I understand your anxiety, but also you are close to getting it over with finally. Lot's of questions, but all are reasonable. I'll share some of my knowledge. Sorry for my lame English. Also I am not a doctor, so these are mostly just my unprofessional opinions. - This might sound like...

    Ross procedure complete

@PAN I'm immensely grateful to you for your story. Would be nice to know what meds you are or were on, prior and post surgery.

Recovery of Ejection Fraction post AVR

It's nice to see that heart gets smaller and EF gets larger, but I highly doubt that cells of the heart muscle that have died from overload really recover. So it's crucial to have the surgery sooner.

New Mechanical Trileaflet Valve in development

The same kind of people like those who participate in trials for the Foldax valve now (at least 40 in USA and a few in India). There are young and otherwise healthy people there too. Also it's best to do trials on generally healthy people for getting cleaner results. And severe valvular disease...

New Mechanical Trileaflet Valve in development

For some reason they still didn't start trials on humans. Is it because the sheep model is much more tolerable to the mechanical valves than humans? But surely all new technologies are welcome. It's also remarkable that a Ross expert works on mechanical valves.

I don’t know what to do anymore

This is precisely what I felt. Having time with my friends and extended family, telling them my fears and feeling sympathy, even silent, has lowered the level of my terror a lot. Noone told me to man up, that I left for myself to do.

And regurgitant fraction of 30% means moderate regurgitation.

    Aortic valve

@pellicle "perhaps ... but that's low anyway right?" - Differs from place to place, and if present can be very unpleasant, as you know, or deadly. Also IMO scarring makes harder to access and distinguish the needed parts, not to cut them off. Since reoperations are likely more invasive...

    Aortic valve

What's here to win? Easier and faster recovery, probably lesser chance for surgical infection, probably easier future reoperation due to less scarring. What's to lose? Having a prompt open reoperation or worse if the robotic surgery fails. The method appears to be good, but is also new and uncommon.

    Aortic valve

https://www.heart-valve-surgery.com/surgeons/dr-Vinay-Badhwar-Morgantown-West%20Virginia.php Actually he does AVR robotically, see video. That's rare.

Newbies: if you ever start feeling "why me" ...

And still we are a vast minority in the population. And valvular disease can be much worse than in your case, pellicle. And it does not protect against other diseases. But let's stay positive. Truly we live in the age of great progress in heart surgery.

    Aortic valve

AFAIK robotic surgery is a very perspective method. The surgeon still operates the robot (DaVinci for example) manually, bit since the robot has cameras and precise manipulators its possible to minimise the wounding. It's a next level endoscopic surgery basically. But, to my knowledge, surgical...

    Yes, looked like it.

    1 week to go!

In this forum, and I dug it deep. There are some, but AS is much more frequent. Also sometimes people don't tell AS from AR, AR from MR. What was the reason for your AVR?

    1 week to go!

DJ-Rae09 I am very glad that you made it and feel fine, makes me feel relieved too, since AR stories are rather rare here. I'd appreciate it if you'd tell your NYHA class and what meds you are on, except for warfarin. Wish you a nice further recovery.

Mechanical vs Tissue - need help deciding

For ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke, or both? Yes, I've read some of your blog and know the risks of reoperations (infections, arrhytmias). Tissue is even less desirable to me, than mechanical, but may be in 5 more years we'll have good data for Inspiris Resilia. Thank you, talking this generally...

Mechanical vs Tissue - need help deciding

Anticipation of living in fear of strokes, internal bleedings and hardships with future possible surgeries. Yes, the mechanical valves were a great achievement, but we deserve something better in 2020-s after 60 years. The possible gains that the polymeric valves promise seem to me so dramatic...

Mechanical vs Tissue - need help deciding

Thanks for welcome and good wishes. Not to derail the thread, but apparently the oldest implanted Foldax valve is already at 3 years mark, which is great. I wonder, how long will the Indian trials last before the valve is cleared for use. At the moment I loathe the mechanical perspective so...
