Hi Everyone,

I'm scared to death. I have a fever and we called the doctor. It's 100.1 and we we're told anything over 100 we had to call. The doctor on call told me to take an asprin (325mg) and give it 2 hours. Then call back if it isn't down.
It's been about 45 mins since the asprin and it's the same.
Has anyone out there had a fever post op and why?
What could be causing this?
:(

Hi Tina,
MY first few days postop I did have low grade fever which was never really attributed to anything specific. It cleared up.
Sorry I don't have an answer.....keep hydrated and cool, try to lie down and relax.

ok

ok

ok thanks guys...It is staying around 100 now so I'm going to watch it overnight...
It takes the body time to get past all the healing it has to do...
talk to you soon

Hang in there Tina and watch the temp. I had asked the Doc about low grade fever and was told the body fights infection well up to about 101.5. After that it needs some help. Not to worry too much you will strong, we have recuperating to do.

There's a disparity in what people are told upon release regarding fevers. It's about 50%-50% that people are told they must call if it's over 100˚F or over 101˚F. And even then, it's only if the fever hangs around.

It's kind of unsettling for them to tell you to call, then tell you to take aspirin, which will take the temperature down. At least, if it continues to go up after taking the aspirin, it can be labeled as definitely worth looking into.

I would like to point out that people can and do get colds and flu when recovering from heart surgery. If the fever did continue, there'd still a very high chance that it wouldn't be related to your heart or surgery. They bring you in just to be sure it isn't. And you do want to be sure.

Best wishes,

Thanks Rich, I've been doing ok today but still with the temp 99-100 but the difference is today I'm taking it EASYYYYYY Yesterday I felt so great I went and went until I crashed. I learned the hard way. I've got to let my body heal.
So that's me how are you? Are you being a "good boy"? It's hard right, when there are these times when I feel like my old self. My last surgery was so painful and I didn't have energy for weeks...
I hope you are feeling great but know when to stop(unlike me) hope your energy is up and you're healing like a ROCKSTAR!!!!
:D

Glad you are feeling better. Do not stop monitoring that temperature, though. It is very important to report anything. For me, it was a urinary tract infection! Fun!!

Glad that you discovered how much you have to pay the price for overdoing it!! It is just amazing what the body will tell you!! Do learn from this lesson and only push yourself in tiny increments. Try to enjoy the down time and don't fight it. Soon your body will catch up to your desires.

Be well!

Tina,

For what its worth, Stanford puts in their heart surgery discharge broshure
"Call your doctor... if you experience any of the following:
Temp above 101F"

I am now 6 days post op. I had a small fevor while in the hospital of about 100. The response was similar and along the severity lines of "lets see if we can get that down...yahn"

They told me it was pretty common and typically temps were higher in the evening when mine and yours seem to be measured.

In my case They discharged me with a 99. It has gone slowly down sinse.
