We left town Thursday, after receiving a call that my husband's dad was in massive heart failure in a southern Illinois hospital. He's had many heart issues over the years, but everyone was surprised when the new cardiologist explained that this time it was originating from his tricuspid valve regurgitation. My mother-in-law has been with him for every exam/hospitalization he has ever had, but either she never heard or never understood, that the tricuspid was failing. The only person who was aware that the valve was failing was my father-in-law (practicing pharmacist), and I guess he figured there was no reason to talk about it.
He has a pacemaker positioned on the side which would make replacement nearly impossible, and he would not be a viable VR candidate anyway.
For now, they're going to try an initial round of dialysis. He has lost about 9 pounds of fluid, with more than 30 pounds to go. The dialysis will have to proceed slowly so the loss of fluid doesn't shock his sytem. I did not know that the long term outlook for dialysis, to aid in CHF caused by right ventricle failure, is not nearly as good as when the failure originates from the left ventricle.
Anyway, we're hoping that this initial round of dialysis will work and perhaps will buy some extra time. Good thoughts and prayers will be appreciated.
Thanks
