I hope you are feeling better by now, Mary.

Any chance that you might have a bladder or urinary tract infection? Have you taken your temp? Might some cranberry juice help?

Just random thoughts.

Thinking of you. Get better!

How often should Potassium level be checked?

How soon should potassium level be checked after a dose increase?

Do (any of) you take Potassium supplements? If so, how much vs. Lasix dose?

Normally I have had my potassium checked after each increase in the diuretics. Last November he didn't check it, because I was on the same dose (40 mg twice a day) and I had no problems with decreased potassium. Right now I take 10 MEQ of potassium chloride.

Some diuretics don't cause a loss of potassium. My husband's father, who over the years has encountered many of the same problems as Nancy's Joe, was recently hospitalized for several days and a new diuretic was started. After returning home, he started showing signs of mental confusion. A trip to the emergency room revealed potassium levels that were TOO high. No one reduced his dose of potassium, so when he started the new diuretic, he basically overdosed on the potassium!

Thanks Marguerite for your thoughts. I considered the same possibilities initially, but it's not an infection. I'm voiding, but I've still got four pounds of fluid to get off. Yuck.

OK, I know it is wise to check the Potassium level after a dose increase, BUT I still need to know how many weeks should pass before having it tested?

They always checked out Joe's at two to three days after an increase, both for his kidney function which was pretty dicey a lot of the time and for potassium levels. If anything was amiss, the increase was stopped post haste.

They did a full Metabolic Profile (BMP) much of the time and sometimes a BNP.

My cardio uses the same time frame as what Nancy has indicated--two to three days after the diuretic is increased.

It's them durned cacti. You been emulatin' 'em and savin' water. Prolly growin' the spikey parts, too. Watch out for 'em, Bob...

You've really got to give it over to VR.com. Where else in the world would you find a couple hundred otherwise perfectly normal people simultaneously willing a grown woman to pee?

Very best wishes,
