finally caught up with the surgeon and had a very worthwhile meeting with him and was happy to agree to proceed towards the operation on
03-03-2008. of course there has been some slow communication but that has been fixed for the futue
he has an old school streak and probably feels a little ill at ease with patients asking loads of questions, especially from those full of internet knowledge; given he has 25 years plus experience and is the best in his speciality.
as i listened to this man talk, i came to appreciate his total commitment to heart surgery, how he had devoted his life to it, and how important it was to him to help people. this is a man who accepts even the most difficult patients and never turns people away because the operation "is too risky or complicated". i have no doubt that he does the job for much more than just the money.
previously he had told me he has never used the on-x valve but this time said "you can have any valve you want", just tell me which one you want by the night before the operation. that sure took the wind out of my sails! he added the on-x valve would not be his first choice if he was the one having the operation and stressed there had only been five fitted at his hospital since 2002.
basically he was saying there is little or no data about the on-x valve which has been confirmed by independant professional/ scientific review with all current data having been assembled/distributed by the manufacturer. he seemed to imply that the situation for the on-x valve was somewhat different?
does anyone have details about independant review?
i also asked how long the on-x valve would have to be in the market before he would recommend it; he replied that it was a good question.
he said i could drink wine and beer untill the operation and mentioned it was scheduled for the afternoon because he needed the cardiologist to check the echo for the repaired valve (hopefully) and it was easier to get hold of him later in the day.
seems the st jude is a great record but i recently saw something on the net about a usa court ordered recall of approx 40,000 st judes
