So, what are yall having? Hubby is cooking a turkey for our dinner tonight. We are home alone:D ;) ;) Tomorrow, we go to daughter's house at Noon.. I'm taking Swedish meatballs, chicken wings, brunswick stew,Lots of ham, turkey and bread for mini sandwiches. Son's family will be there for this lunch..then off to his in-laws....jugging all family.:D .......Have to keep everyone happy.:D ...Bonnie

Resa's making baked ham, green beans, smashed potatoes, sweet potato souffle, rolls/biscuits, apple pie, red velvet cake, chocolate pie, iced tea. Keepin it simple. There will be brother, sister/husband, Resa and me - maybe granddaughter sometime during the day but that's iffy. I Could use some of that brunswick stew, Bonnie. You make it the easy way or the old fashioned way? I bet most of VR doesn't even know what brunswick stew is, don't you?

I' m making my stew the easy way:D ..Not, like the old times..when Daddy and Uncles stayed up all night stirring the big black pot..and sipping a little moonshine.:p In fact, it will only take me an hour to put it together in the a.m. ..thanks to all the new packaged food on the market.Refrigerated diced potatoes, refrigerated shredded pork barbeque...canned diced tomatoes and lima beans ..frozen shoepeg corn.....Maybe I will have a sip of moonshine ..when I'm working so hard.:D ..Bonnie

Food? Did you ask about food?

Food? Did you ask about food?

Well, Wayne and I had quite the Christmas feast and it was just for the two of us. :) Turkey stuffed with oranges/lemons/thyme/onion/garlic; oyster dressing; creamed spinach; mashed potatoes and gravy; sweet potato casserole with pecans, cranberries and marshmallows; orange tapioca Jello dessert with whipped cream; whole wheat rolls; organic cranberry sauce; Syrah and Swiss cheese; pumpkin pie with whipped cream for dessert.

My Mom would have been/IS so proud, I am sure. :) She sure taught me a lot about how to get around in the kitchen. I don't consider myself a gourmet cook, but I am an "adequate" cook. :)

Needless to say, Wayne and I have leftovers to last for 2-3 days. Yum!!

OH - and cinnamon rolls and organic coffee for breakfast before we opened our presents.

Right now, I am going to "roll away" from this computer for the evening. Hope you all had a very blessed Christmas and first night of Hanukkah.

For lunch I had a Christmas tuna fish sandwich. I think dinner will be the Christmas Boca burger. :D

I'm a traditionalist.

Started off with hot chocolate before opening presents. Then I made eggs benedict and we had mimosas. Spent the day relaxing and now my SO is making waffles from scratch (he could open a waffle restaurant with his recipe - yumm).

Tomorrow we go to my sister's and she is making turkey and trimmings.

Melissa, I love your Christmas feasts.

Jan - brunswick stew is a very old southern U.S. dish, made with whole kernel corn, pulled pork/chicken, lima beans, and Bonnie will have to supply the rest of the list. The blend of vegs and meat gives it a particularly good flavor. When made it turns out to be enough to feed at least one army, maybe two. It can, these days, be made from frozen and canned ingredients, except the meats, but long ago, the chicken had to be pulled into stringy pieces and the pork, too, so that nobody got chunks of meat; just bits. Very flavorful, very good. I have never made it, but eaten it all my life. My mother made it when I was very little. She was not a true southerner but learned it by living in the south for years. My dear Joe (New York city fellow) and I went to visit a Georgia cousin, she gave us a quart to bring home because Joe fell in love with it. I don't know why the name, but there is a city called Brunswick in the state of Georgia (deep U.S. south) and p'raps that is where the name started. It is a desired food for church suppers, family gatherings and anywhere that large quantities are needed.

Red velvet cake is very popular. It is a regular cake, with lots of red food color, enough almond flavoring to change the taste of a regular white or yellow cake. The icing is a special one, made with cream cheese, nuts added. This cake requires, I believe, a bit more time to prepare than a regular cake. I, again, never made one, but have eaten lots of them. Probably somebody will supply the missing parts that I left out. It is a beautiful cake for Christmas. It's a nationwide cake, not southern.

Maybe someone will supply these recipes and you can spread it around over the pond.

Well now, I made a 10lb ham, green beans, parsleyed potatos, yams and cranberry sauce. Nothing special, just edible.

Ann left out the potatoes and tomatoes in the Brunswick stew.:p We are lucky that we have a huge super-size grocery store..where one can find lots of food..where you do not have to start from Scratch. Lots of meat that is not frozen but refrigerated packaged..Like what I used in my stew.Bar-be-cue pork. Also, refrigerated potatoes that I cooked in 3 cups of chicken broth for the flavor...then add the canned tomatoes and frozen shoepeg corn...and canned lima beans..just cook for 30 minutes...Hubby and I were just talking how we really need to clean out these huge pots..Used, years ago, when I had to have several things cooking at same time.. Just the 2 of us..We make out fine with one roasting pan, small pot for veggies and the microwave for baked potatoes. I still have my M/I/L's HUGE pots (she was Swedish)stored in my basement.I still remember her..chopping, peeling, ect. to make a special dish...I made her meatballs and my son said yesterday. these taste just like Granny made them..didn't tell him how easy they are to make now.:p .. she also used real linen tablecloths and napkins and ironed them.:) ..I used paperware at daughter's....Too many young ones to try to have them sit still for a buffet..they sat at child's table..and we still had the spills. ..Menfolk stood around table and ate and talked.:p and ate some more. Now, I have to say, yes, my family always sat down for supper and daughter is doing the same...Just not yesterday with many people. Coming and going. Bonnie

Christina,

You and Wayne are welcome anytime. I love any excuse to make Eggs Benedict to say nothing of mimosas.:D :D ;)

Ross,

I make my own sauce but I have an electric sauce cooker. All I have to do is put in the egg yolks, butter, lemon juice and white pepper and plug it in. The cooker stirs and heats the ingredients and 10 minutes or so later - great hollandaise. Works just as great for Bernaise and custards.
