We are planning to take a 5 hour flight to LA then a 12-13 hour flight to Brisbane. Does anyone know if there is an increased risk of blood clotting w/ AVR? My husband has a porcine valve, takes one baby aspirin a day....

I don't think there's an increased risk due to his having had the aortic valve replaced. However, I think we've all read the reports stating the risk of DVTs increases with long flights. You might call the cardiologist's office and see if they possibly recommend upping the aspirin dosage for a few days previous to travel.

What I did on a flight from Minneapolis/St Paul to Honolulu was: I told the flight attendants that I was a heart patient and needed to get up and walk up and down the aisle for a few minutes, every couple hours. They were very understanding. If you want to, you could probably get your cardio to write a note to that effect--possibly on a prescription slip.

Have a good trip!

Yep, the Best Advice would be to get up and walk for 5 minutes or so every 1 or 2 hours, even if you are NOT a Heart Patient...

A number of years ago, I had emergency abdominal surgery three and a half weeks before a planned trip to Italy. My surgeon permitted me to go but advised I walk up and down the aisle every two hours. I did so and had no problems. I always have walked the aisle a little on every long flight since. Whether your DH is at more risk for clot with AVR would be a question for his doctor. He many advise larger aspirin dose....or not. Perhaps a 325 mg for a few days before the flight rather than 81 mg baby aspirin.
